There are a little over 200 countries in the world.We have been in Cuba,Puerto Rico(now a U.S. Territory)The Phillipines,etc. since the 18th century.Whether in a state of war,or not, we will be in Iraq for years.

When and if there is another World War it will not go on forever and it will not end up a single big flash of a mushroom (cloud).

It will end when far too many mushroom clouds have risen 30,000 feet or more into the atmosphere and one side of the conflict either can no longer continue combat... or...
one side decides the moral choice and surrenders even if they still have the capacity to continue to war war (far less likely).
