A lot of places have what are known as "blue laws" that prohibit activities that are considered improper by the Christian majority. Many of these laws are archaic and have been on the books for a long time. Some of these laws have been interpreted in weird and unusual ways. Alcohol, especially hard liquor, is commonly outlawed on Sundays as an attempt to enforce certain "moral" behavior on the Sabbath (even though we supposedly have a secular government).

For instance, in Virginia, the state has a law against selling hard liquor on Sundays but beer and wine are okay. Some localities in Virginia have additional laws outlawing the sale of beer and wine on Sunday. Some of these laws have also been interpreted as outlawing other types of commerce. There are areas of the state where it is considered illegal for a car dealership to make a sale on a Sunday, but other stores are allowed to stay open.

The whole thing is silly.

See answer from Maeve. The blue-laws in Connecticut prohibit sale on Sunday and after 9pm every other day from a liquor store or Grocery/convenience store. You can however be served in a bar on Sundays and after 9pm. It was 8pm until just a few years back
