run your fingers along your cat's sides and rib cage. A cat in ideal weight will have a little "padding" over the ribs, but you should still be able to feel the ribs. If on the other hand you feel very little padding over the ribs; if the belly-tuck is very pronounced; and if the hip bones are readily felt, then your cat is under-weight. In obese cats, you won't be able to feel the ribs at all and the belly protrudes at the sides.

You check weight in animals by use of the body condition score. You should be able to easily feel your cats ribs, but not see them, and the hip bones should not be sticking out. Check out this website:

It has a cool little slider-diagram thing that you can use to see which picture your cat most looks like.

If you think your cat's underweight, go to your vet for some dietary advice and a check up. Underweight can be caused by illnesses, especially in older cats.

A cat is underweight if it feels "bony," has little or no fat on the ribs, or appears to "cave in" just behind the ribs. At an ideal weight, a cat appears well-proportioned, shows a moderate waistline behind the ribs, and has a thin covering of fat over the ribs and abdomen.

most adult cats should weigh at least 4.5 kilos with male cats being up to and sometimes over 6 kilos. If you cat is under 4 kilos it is probably under what it should be.
