Sport Utility Vehicle. Which is pretty dumb to come up with that after many years of vehicles with the same type of design were already on the road before that term even came about, and if you think back far enough the first SUV was a wagon pulled by horses, they'd go anywhere the horses would pull it. Also the covered wagon was the first RV (Recreational Vehicle). So these auto manufactures are quite behind on times given the history of vehicles, such as the International Scout in which that time they were called trucks whether they had a truck bed or was completely enclosed, same with the Ford Bronco, Chevy Blazer, Dodge Ram Charger, etc. All of which are actually built on a truck frame, so if you actually classify the vehicle its a truck, there isn't a registration code for SUV. Its either a car, truck, or van. Hmm, no SUV acronym mentioned was there, so I guess your SUV is actually a truck. Which is correct, The Ford Bronco was built on an F-150 frame, the Blazer was built on the same size frame as the 1/2 ton Chevy truck, the Dodge Ram Charger was built on the 1/2 ton dodge truck frames. So technically the SUV idea has been around since well before there were engines in vehicles.
Yes I know how to confuse people, just simply tell them that their Brand New Ford Explorer is actually built on a Ford Ranger Chassis.

SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. This type of vehicle is just for the name sake, it is larger come with bigger rims and sport tires. Just good for people to show off the vehicle size. Heavy fuel consumption and unable to perform well outside the city road and highway. Especially stay away from the Korean made SUV - S to them stands for Stupid!
