I began painting clothes with acrylic paint. I washed a pair of jeans and the paint faded. I take hours to paint designs on the clothes and i am looking for a way to make them last! Any suggestions? ty

Acrylic is thick and it just sits on the surface of the cloth. You need something that would be a little more thinner or you can apply the acrylic in thinner coats so it will stain the through the pores of the fabric. I don't recommend using acrylic at all though. It hardens and the color would flake off. There are paints for fabrics available and you can even apply silk screening ink with a paint brush. You just don't want stay away from laying down thick coats of paint that would decimate your design.

That was a good reply up ther in cashew.... Don't use acrylic. If you already have then you need to hand wash, hang dry and apply vaseline on to the paint as its drying. Dont fold on the design. To prevent cracking in the cold apply a thin coat of vaseline. In the heat the acrlylic softens up into a bendable material. Vaseline will only help slow down the damaging process. I know because it's happened to me. I now only airbrush with fabric paint on fabric.

DecoArt makes a fabric paint that comes in about 30 different colors. Plus they also make a fabric painting medium that you add to your regular acrylics to make it adhere to the fabruc better. Use hard bristle brushes to scrub the paint into your fabric while painting, instead of just laying it onto the fabric. I find it best to line dry the garment instead of putting it through the dryer. DecoArt can be purchased at craft stores, or try www.craftcatalog.com.

I started using acrylic paint on clothes (okay, accidentally) 35 years ago. I never could get it out. Now I don't try. There are mediums for making acrylic paint more flexible for use on cloth. You can find them at art and craft stores, and on the online stores, as well. Have fun.
