It could last for a long time. The trick would be to relax, hiccups are caused by your diaphragm being in spasm. The diaphragm works with the muscles in your chest to expand your lungs when you breathe. It is a large muscle just at the base of your ribs. People try a lot of different things to relax this muscle, not all are successfull. I did hear that if you cough really hard when you feel your next hiccup coming on that it could help to relax the diaphragm. Good Luck, but you should continue to seek medical help if your hiccups dont stop.

A spasm of the diaphragm resulting in a rapid, involuntary inhalation that is stopped by the sudden closure of the glottis and accompanied by a sharp, distinctive sound. And this is a nicer way to know what r hiccups!: "Hic!" You've just hiccuped for what seems like the tenth time since you finished your big dinner. Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: die-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here. The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup. Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem. You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups. Other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free. Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups. Boo!

There's no clear cut answer to this question. For the majority of people, hiccups usually last a few minutes to a half an hour, and sometimes return in bouts throughout the day. But for a 15 yr old at my daughter's school, they lasted weeks. The school refused to allow her to attend because they disrupted the environment. She tried everything imaginable, even medications, and what finally worked was being hypnotized (I think that's correct, her parents said she was put in a trance.) And they still came back, but just in bouts now.

Does it really hurt or is it just bugging you? If it hurts bad see a doctor. I have noticed that younger people have more hiccups than older people. Also my dogs get the hiccups its funny. My older dog used to get them about 3 or 4 times a week now she doesn't get them as often, but now my younger puppy gets them as often as my older dog did when she was younger. So maybe age has to do with it. Just try thinking about something else and they will go away.......

Eat one or two big marshmellows.
Really, all you need to do is witch your breathing patterns and regulate them to the new time.
So, time your breaths then hold it until you would normally not take a new one.
That should fix them.
I've had hiccups that lasted an hour.
Very painful.

THIS- works for me; Get in a relaxed position, & EXHALE all the air you can from your lungs- and HOLD IT for as long as you can stand it. I KNOW this gets VERY uncomfortable- in a hurry. -But it seems to break the "rhythem" of the hiccups, and it usually works for me. Good luck- & have a nice (hiccup-free) Easter. :)

Long ago in a science book I heard if you fill a glass of water to the top, rest your chin in it, take 3 sips it would cure it. I thought it was nonsense till I tried it, and it worked marvelously! Been doing it ever since! Not disappointed. But everyone is different. My friend takes a scoop of peanut butter and works for her
