I'm living in an apartment with my two dogs, have been doing fine for 3 years, no flea or tick, just nothing.. Everything was very clean! Until, my dog gave birth to six puppies, and I started noticing fleas, neither on the puppies nor on the female, but only the male dog, and myself! I have no idea where they are coming from, but I'm sure they are ALOT! I saw about 5 myself the last two days, and have been suspecting they are present from a week now. My plan today is, send the carpets and the bed covers to the dry clean, vaccum everywhere, move the dogs and the puppies to the balcony for as long as the sun is up, meanwhile, spray every kind of insicts killers everywhere, drop the furniture covers, the dogs bed, the blankets and anything that could be washed into the machine, then give the dogs a bath with their so-called anti-fleas shampoo, then apply the anti-fleas drops to their skin. Is this enough to get rid of them? (Note that, we don't have all of the products here in Egypt!) :(

Be careful using too many insecticides with puppies in the apartment. You can use Diatomaceous Earth if available on your rugs esp. along the edges after vacuuming. Work it in with a broom. It dries the fleas out.

http://tinyurl.com/2hsmw3 has some natural alternatives.

If you have a Veterinarian locally, please talk to them. You could end up poisoning your puppies.

I would vacuum thoroughly, wash the adult dogs and if the Vet says it's ok, use a topical flea killer (Advantage or Frontline).

Flea bombs work well, but you need to air out the apt. really well or the pups could get sick. Sprays have not worked well for me.

When you bathe the adult dogs, start at the neck make a ring of shampoo around the neck to keep the fleas from running to the face. Flea comb the face and comb any fleas into the shampoo. Shampoo the rest of the body and leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes to kill the fleas. Rinse really well. Check for any soap residue. Do not leave any soap on the dogs or they may scratch from the soap and cause their skin worse problems.

Don't use too many chemicals. If you can get Frontline or Advantage they will keep the fleas off the animals. Use monthly as directed. Puppies over 8 weeks I think can use that as well (ask the Vet).

Good luck, I hate fleas.

regards,
retired groomer

ps. Do not use the topical flea drops the same day you bathe them. It won't hurt the dogs, but it also won't work as well. Wait a day or two between bathing and using the topical treatment. I worked at a Vet and I was the groomer there, so I do know about this stuff. The dogs' natural skin oils help spread the drops....so too clean and it doesn't work well.

It is very possible you have fleas in your bed as well as in other parts of your house. I highly suggest you wash your sheets and then put them back on your bed. Treat your entire house with flea treatment. You can buy a powder, or a spray. Purchase a flea comb, and comb through your cat, if you get any fleas on the comb, quickly dunk the comb in water to drown the flea. You can get flea treatment to use on your cat, and that works pretty well. Go to the vet if the flea problem becomes bad and they can give you frontline or some other flea killer. If your house becomes infested with fleas, you will have to call an exterminator. You need to vacuum often and if you know a spot where the fleas are (on the carpet or anywhere), then put a clean towel in the dryer and make the towel really warm. Take the towel out and drag it across the surface, and some of the fleas should jump onto the towel, and then you soak the towel. Also, washing your cat with dawn soap helps kill fleas, but not prevent them. Goodluck!

Sounds like a good plan except do not bathe them with flea shampoo AND give them flea drops. They are both pesticides and will poison the dogs, Use one or the other but not both. You can also cut up a flea collar and put that in the vacuum cleaner bag, or like the other person suggested just throw it away, but you will probably want to vacuum every day for a week. Good luck

For you EAT garlic, they hate it, Buy a Bob Martins Flea bomb to fumigate the apartment, then buy a good neem shampoo , fleas hate the stuff.

Add mint to any bedding , liberally add salt to carpets and floors, leave overnight (make sure dogs cant get at it this will kill them)
Use frontline every three months and also use a flea bomb every three weeks for a year, even if you dont see any, these cam lay dormant for 150 days and this is why fleas are a pain in the bum, people dont realise they are there just waiting for a nice warm day to hatch.

You're in Egypt? Always wanted to go there.

Annnnd I'd flea bomb the apartment. That's what we did a few summers back and no problems since. :]

If you don't have flea bombs, then what you're going to do sounds fine :] Make sure you let the apartment air out before you let the dogs back in, though. Don't want them getting sick! :[

you are making the right choice anything you can wash do it but i would get flea bombs and place them in all of your rooms but you have to leave your house for a few hours while they work when you get back clean your whole apartment and make sure you get a flea treatment from your vet to stop the fleas goodluck

You can use vinegar for fleas on puppies too young for regular flea products.

Use plain white vinegar, warm it slightly first, apply with a cotton ball, and keep away from nose and eyes.

Puppies don't seem to mind the smell and their coats are so soft.

add vinegar to bath water and be rid of doggie odor too.

supposedly eucalyptus[sp?], lemon, and tea tree oil helps i.e. spray it, rub it on your dog, mix in shampoo, etc.
also, good flea/tick shampoos [especially w/tea tree oil] and powders work really well. flea collars SUCK.
those nasty little buggers.
