Until 1517 there was one Catholic Church. In 1517 Martin Luther broke away and that set the precedent for making new churches over every disagreement. In 1533 Henry the VIII broke away and started the Anglican Church. All later churches offshoots of these two and many are break aways from earlier schisms.

Basically the separation started when the Catholic church broke from the Orthodox church. They broke because the Catholic wanted one leader (the Pope) and the Orthodox believed that one man couldn't "rule" over the church. They are to this day governed by a group of leaders all of which have no more or less "power" than the man sitting next to them. In the Orthodox church they also allow a Priest to be married and have children....I don't know where the Catholics got that celibacy thing...but it doesn't seem to really work does it? From the first separation you get many more and all based on points of views from someone who wasn't happy with where they were and where they saw their church heading. If you want alot of great information get a copy of The Everything Christianity Book by Michael Russell and Amy Wall.

The Mother Church was the Roman Catholic Church. Due to some differences the Orthodox Church was the first to separate. Martin Luther later started the Protestant Reformation which gave birth to the Lutheran Church and other Protestant denominations. Today there are about 5 major Christian denominations and 30,000 smaller denominations each one claiming to be the true Christian faith. I hope this helps you.
Peace and every blessing!

Basically all of the Christian denominations believe in Christ. All of the denominations started out as Catholic but during the period were the Catholic church was accused of unethical dealings (exchanging pardons for money, etc.) groups of people started branching out, starting with Luther nailing his points on a church door.
All of the denominations believe in Christ but each one pretty much pick and choose what they believe in. For example Lutherans find it hard to accept Mary as Jesus' mother but Catholics put Mary on a very special pedestal.

The main difference is that Lutheran, Baptist and other Protestant Churches are created by man and not by Jesus. While the Catholic Church is the Church that Jesus built in Jerusalem.

the problem is views. If someone had political power and power in the church and he didnt like the vies of the church he created his own, and only changed that one difference.
problems ranged from views of if jesus was a man or not to family feuds(like King Henry who started the anglo-saxon church to divorce his wife without breaking any rules)

Different views by humans, not God...causes for lots of problems. They make 'rules and conditions' that they teach their congregations they must do to get to Heaven. God didn't make these kind of rules and conditions. He said the ONLY way to Heaven is through Jesus...if you've repented of your sins and asked for forgiveness and Jesus is the Lord of your life, no man or woman on earth should tell you there's another way.

It is a group of people who have a name for their group. But all are worship one God. God sent Jesus to this world who obeyed and had lots of messages from God. All His words are true. One who understands what He has said will know that there is God and He has not abandoned mankind. God is answering our prayers, healing the sick, consoling the broken hearted... So anyone who seeks God earnestly, God will know their heart and make Himself known to them. So its ok if there are groups, God is concerned about the heart more than anything.
