I think this should have been done years ago, without any hesitation. Now the illegals are marching for immediate citizenship again. Do you think they're demands will succeed? I certainly hope not. I want Bush to stand his ground on this issue. We all know he can have the tenacity of a pit bull when he needs to.

I don't trust what he is proposing now because it is such a 180 degree change from what he proposed last year. I think he is trying to appease the American citizens who are SO against illegal immigration, but I wouldn't put it past him to not follow through later. Just like the "fence" on the southern border that was passed into law last year. Where is that fence? How come it hasn't been built yet?

Anyways, no, I don't think the illegals will get their demands and I certainly hope not. I want them ALL deported and only immigrants who apply to come properly through our legal immigration procedure should be allowed any kind of considerations. Just because illegal immigrants have managed to duck and hide out from authorities for more than 5 years should not allow them any special considerations and rewards. They are criminals and they should be treated as such and deported.

The only consideration that I would make is if illegals were told that if they voluntarily removed themselves from the country by a set date, say, within a month, that they would not be penalized if they return to their country on their own dime and then apply through the legal procedures to return. However, they need to move to the back of the line behind those who have already applied legally and have been waiting patiently. I don't even want them to have to pay any big fines, just if they deport themselves now and do it the right way, let them come back then, as long as they qualify, meaning that they have not committed identity fraud in the US, have never been deported previously, and have never committed a crime worse than speeding in the US and have no outstanding fines or other bills, such as for medical care that they have not paid for, and have never received social assistance in the US - if they have, allow them to pay back every dime that they received before being allowed to apply to return.

Also, I would like to hear the government propose that no more babies born in the USA to illegal immigrants will be granted US citizenship.

You mean the new stand that reneges on the fence he signed into law just in October?

That 'pit bull' stand?

And with Elvira Arellano still sitting in Chicago one can hardly call him big on enforcement.

I saw the outline of his position. All I can say is it sounds better than STRIVE, but I don't expect the protective (of us) parts to survive, and no bill is much better than a bad bill.

I agree with Daisy about birthright citizenship as well. Every country in the EU and Canada have dropped automatic birthright citizenship - and for excellent reason. It is far too abused against countries that subsidize education and services for their own people.

I'm with Daisy on this one. It just doesn't ring true. in any case, such a proposal does have to get past Congress. Maybe he's doing it to offer the eventual Republican nominee a leg up (because Democrats can be relied upon to vote down such a stern bill) but, if that is the case, it seems awfully strange timing.

I'll believe it when it actually becomes law. I do believe that some form of this plan will pass,I think government might actually be waking up to what the majority of Americans want. There is an election coming up.

Regulate immigration and only those that are qualified must be granted citizenships.
