Mine isn't at the top but, I do have about a 9x9 size right between the shoulder blades. The spine and neck are some of the most sensitive spots to be tattooed. I didn't start getting jumpy until about 3 1/2 hours into it. I went numb after about 15 minutes and dozed off around the 2 1/2 hour mark. I sat like a trooper for just over 4 hours total. The 2x3 you're talking about? Piece of cake :) Your body's natural painkillers(endorphins) will kick in after about 10 minutes. You should n't really feel a thing after that. Then again, everyone's different. Be sure to have a good meal before you get started and have a bottle of water with you. You will be fine:) Happy tattoo:)

I have one about 8 x 7 inches across my upper back. I was fine for the whole tattoo, except when he was doing the base of my neck. I've had a couple car accidents and have a disc that is still out of line. The highest point of my tattoo went right on top of it. I mentioned it ahead of time, so he did that area last. I wouldn't have gotten throught the sitting otherwise. Soon as he hit that spot my pain tolerance went out the door. Hurt like hell for me, but not so much that I won't go back to get more done on it. :)
You'll be fine, any pain that comes with tattoos is totally worth the outcome.

I have a tribal that starts at the back of my neck and goes down to the middle of my back.
Tattoos hurt. It's a needle pounding your skin. As for the naysayers, if a collared shirt covers it, don't worry about it.

I have a tattoo on the back of my left shoulder. I hardly felt it. Some areas of the body hurt more than others. The one on my tummy hurt like hell. The one on my ankle was painless. It also depends on your pain tolerance. First tattoos may hurt more than subsequent ones...you don't know what to expect with the first one. It's not so bad. Make sure you want it, though. It's not like you can erase it if you change your mind.

Back of the neck and the ribs are the most painful areas to get a tattoo...
Just a warning.

my opinion on tattoos is that they should be more of a personal thing, rather than a public thing. i do not have a tattoo, but if i were to ever get one it would be in a place that i could easily cover it up.
i'm not sure how old you are, but think about your future career aspirations. many professions will not hire people with visible tattoos. you will want to consider that in your decision making process.
personally, i think the tattoo is a little bit too large for this area of your body. however i am a bit more conservative when it comes to body art. i hope this helps though!

I have heard upper to middle back is the easiest place to get one but neck might hurt with all those pressure points located in it.

That's a good idea to have it below your t-shirt collar. When you get into another thing you can do another one under your shirt and mark the passages of your life.

Painful area??
Absolutely
Anything near bone is
painful. I find the spine
to be very painful.
Maybe your artist
will be light handed.
But 2-3" is small,
so shouldn't take to long.
