Funny isn't it, you can always tell the people that just cannot keep on the right side of the law and then blame the police for doing their job when you read answers to questions like yours.
Yes there are some bad officers out there but if you ever hear of people changing it is because of the constant pressures of the job, the things you have to witness (nasty sights etc) the attitudes of people towards you whatever your attitude towards them. This is what can make officers cynical or have a bad attitude.
Imagine you've worked 10 hours in the freezing cold and wet weather. Haven't had a day off in about 10 or more and then you get some smartarse pisshead come up to you being rude. Police are human, they will snap at some point, rightly or wrongly.
To be a good officer you need to be patient, understanding, a teamplayer, don't mind getting stuck in to whatever tasks however mundane (standing on a crime scene for 8+ hours is extremely mundane). I personally think that you really need a bit of life experience and maturity even though the age to enter is quite young.
People bring differently qualities but most of all you need to have the ability to not take things personally. Any nasty or rude comments are made towards the uniform not you. I have trouble dealing with that sometimes.

Compassionate firm and fair. One of the most common calls man police officers get are domestic disturbances. A certain level of compassion often required to gain trust and control of the situation.

If you really want the job, and are able to cope with all the things you're going to see, and handle, and are able to separate the job from your personal life, then you'll have the answer in about 20 years.

One who actually follows the laws themselves. Not be racial or doing things out of their own terms and benefits. An honest cop.

I agree "good policeman" is an oxymoron. Most desire to become cops becaues they desire power. Most cops were either bullied or are bullys. Their primary function IS NOT to help you.
