Pharoah was supposedly the living embodiment of God in Egypt. As a God-King, he could not allow his "omnipotence" to be challenged by a bunch of slaves wanting to leave the country to "sacrifice" to another God.

Pharoah could accept the existence of another God. He was, after all, a polytheist. However, he could not accept that "Isreal's God" was more important than his own, especially since he was supposedly God incarnate! At all costs, he "had" to resist the call of the slaves god, in order to keep order in his kingdom. To do otherwise, without a display of power, would have undermined the kingdom, and his own authority as Pharoah.

The Ten Plagues changed all that. One after another of Pharoah's "powers" were picked up and stomped on by the God of Isreal. The Nile, sunlight, crops, sickness/health, animals, weather, snakes, and even life and death, were all supposed to be controlled by Egypt's pantheon, headed up by Pharoah! One after another, at Moses' word, each was overthrown: Moses' staff-snake ate the majician's, the Nile became "blood", frogs/flies/pestilence swarmed the land/ hail hammered one crop, locusts another, the sun was apparantly extinguished for days at a time! Finally, when the country led by Pharoah's "gods" was in ruins, the firstborn children (of all ages, man or beast) were struck dead in one night.

That was the last straw. Even Pharoah couldn't fight death. He didn't decide in "favor" of the Isrealites; he tried to cut his losses by getting "those people" out of the country.

Before the plagues, the Isrealites had just been chattel. Just slaves.

Now, they were a nation with a kick-@sp God, that would ruin the country if they weren't allowed to leave.

the right word???

the newest theory i've heard is that the israelites supplied themselves for thier long journey by raiding an egyptian town. The pharoah was happy to be rid of them but could not allow them to ransack villages on the way out so he sent the army to stop them as it was a crime obviously to attack a town and take all the food.

historians now say that egypt did not keep slaves, they were paid and the Jews were a military tribe (as they still are today), who were hired to protect egypts east border. The word in hebrew is the word for worker not slave. Obviously plagues don't really happen, i won't bother to explain the rest to you.

(This is going from memory....) All the "plagues" that Moses warned Pharaoh of each time, happened. Eventually, the Egyptians land were just plagued-filled areas. Pharaoh had to give in, because his people were tired of all the plagues, so he finally gave Moses' and the Israel it's way. :)

Egypt had a huge influence on the beliefs of Judaism. Remember, this was the time before Moses wrote the first 5 books in the bible. Think about how Egypt influenced them.

It is pretty well historically proven that the Exodus story did not and could not have happened.
