Depression is a mental illness, but doesn't make you crazy.

depression is certainly not crazy although you may feel as though you are going crazy you are not. it is however a mental illness, and sometimes does need to be treated with medication and therapy. it is like being diabetic you have to watch your diet and take either your pills or shots and you will be ok. same with depression if you take your pills and do your therapy you will be fine and can live a fairly normal life. maintain a good job and have a sucessful marriage and have a great family and good friends. so don't be put off if you have been diagnosed as depressed there are a lot of us and we all do great, hope this helps

its depents on how often and how serious the despression is
then much of common despression that it is usual to almost every human being is not considered as a illness
but if you got a really serious depression which you couldn't get rid of it for a long time or else you are much more depressed than anybody else who had come across the same condition like you,it proves you really suffer a mentally ill

Not crazy, no, but part of the mental-illness spectrum. I think people are much more understanding about depression, now, since most families have someone who's depressed and it's so common. Check out www.nami.org for info.

Crazy, no. Mentally ill, yes - if seriously, clinically depressed, not just "blue." But remember that "mental illness" is a kind of misnomer -as we dicover more and more of the biological bases of these disorders this becomes clear.

Mentally ill because you have a medical illness which affects your mental state...it is not at all the same thing as crazy.

Ps. the person above gave the best answer so far...spot on.

mentally ill is not something a person can control per se therefore it is a brain disorder just like a physical disorder. But a person can get better depending on the diagnosis, or at least better and stable There is a behavior and mental component to many diseases just like high BP or diabetes if you don't take care of yourself it gets out of control

Absolutely not. Depression is when you are feeling a bit down. It can also be caused by a chemical imbalance. I know as I had it for a few years. I use to also have panic attacks for no reason, and eventually a doctor recognised it for what it was and put me on medication, that helped and is now gone. We all have ups and downs but sometimes its how we handle it that makes a difference. Its best not to leave it too long but to seek help. Why suffer if you dont have to.

It depends. They've discovered that a lot of what we would call "depression" is a chemical imbalance in the brain. But only a doctor can diagnose it and it takes a while to do that.
