I don't think anyone has used it since back when I was a little kid! Try watching "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"...it's probably all over the place there! In its day, though, I think it was used by white teenagers, particularly the SoCal surfer set.

Probably only the coolest people on earth... Gnarly is like the most common word ever and if you don't know that that's a little strange......

It was originally 1980's California surfer lingo as in "Gnarly (awesome, formidable, stupefying etc.) waves, dude! The word is still used mostly by surfers and valley girls, who often borrow words from surfer lingo (or surfer speak). It is also occasionally used by high school students.

Occassionly I'll hear it said by surfers in Southern California, but that's about it.
