I have an "M" rule:

Manhattan
Martini
Mai Tai
Mojito
Margarita

and it all really depends on where you are when you order it:
Steakhouse: Martini, Manahttan
Asian: Mai Tai, Mojito
Mexican: Margarita, Mojito
Other: pick any one

and then girls can order a Cosmo and get away with it just about anywhere

also,

chicks can also order a Sidecar- the bourbon (or cognac)may be a little harsh but you'll know what kind of chick you're dealing with (classy, w/ good taste and style) if she likes it.

It really just depends on where you are and what they have. I have never seen a chick who can't order their own drink though. As expensive as drinks can be who would want to take the risk of ordering something that the other person doesn't want?

My wife isn't picky, she like fruity drink. Bahama Mama, Tequila Sunrise, margaritas....really anything colorful and fruity.

Edit: To the person above...YES Mojitos...I was trying to think about that but couldn't remember. Definitely a good choice as well.

Order something that you (and hopefully your date) will like. You don't look sexy or sophisticated forcing down a drink.

I'm partial to Captain & Coke and whiskey sours. More of a bar drink. In a restaurant you might opt for wine. If you don't know much about wine, your server can usually help you without making you feel stupid.

If you're really not sure, you could just say to your date - how about a ----?

one in each of my favorites is a Cape Cod, it truly is Vodka and Cranberry. it truly is common, absolutely everyone is conscious a thank you to make it, and it is so lots extra state-of-the-paintings than a Rum & Coke. yet another thought is to look on the martini menu once you circulate to a fancy eating place. they generally have solid recipes and you will not sense such as you're ordering such as you may have in a night club. solid success!
