If my ex still compliments me and says he is happy thinking about me. Like the other day I told him I felt better now that I had been working out for a while. He said you looked great then, how could you look better than perfection.

Sounds like he is just being nice. Afterall he is your EX, right? If he wanted you, he'd tell you. Why does everyone have to read stuff into people being nice? If you feel better, just ask him, after all you were close once, that shouldn't be too hard.

It sounds like he wants you back and depending on the circumstances why he is your ex I would just disregard what he is saying and move on.
