I have found, sitting in a reclining chair, with a rolled up bath towel, in the small of my back, a tremendous help.

It depends on the extent of the injury. When I strain my back, the best thing is heat and rest. It takes a few days to come around, but eventually it does. Other types of injuries may respond to rest and then certain types of exercises. Some people swear by chiropractors, but sometimes once you go to them you are "hooked" and they will never let you go.
