The Bible never specifically mentions masturbation or states whether masturbation is a sin. There is no question, however, as to whether the actions that lead to masturbation are sinful. Masturbation is the end result of lustful thoughts, sexual stimulation, and/or pornographic images. It is these problems that need to be dealt with. If the sins of lust and pornography are forsaken and overcome - the problem of masturbation will become a non-issue.

The Bible tells us to avoid even the appearance of sexual immorality (Ephesians 5:3). I do not see how masturbating can pass that particular test. Sometimes a good test for whether something is a sin or not is whether you would be proud to tell others what you had just done. If it is something you would be embarrassed or ashamed about if others found out, it is very likely that it is a sin. Another good test is to determine whether we can honestly, in good conscience, ask God to bless and use the particular activity for His own good purposes. I do not think masturbation qualifies as something we can be "proud" of or can genuinely thank God for.

The Bible teaches us, "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). If there is room for doubt as to whether it pleases God, then it is best to give it up. There is definitely room for doubt in regards to masturbation. "For whatsoever is not of faith is sin" (Romans 14:23). I do not see how, according to the Bible, masturbation could be considered glorifying to God. Further, we need to remember that our bodies, as well as our souls, have been redeemed and belong to God. "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This great truth should have a real bearing on what we do and where we go with our bodies. So, in light of these principles, I would definitely have to say that masturbation is a sin according to the Bible. I do not believe that masturbation is pleasing to God, avoids the appearance of immorality, or passes the test of God having ownership over our bodies.

As sin of course, see: 1 Peter 2:11, James 1:14-15, 2 Timothy 2:22, Exodus 20:17, and Matthew 5:27-28

Well, I don't think there is any scripture forbiding it.

But the bible does say we aren't to be controlled(addicted) to anything.

So, as long as you aren't addicted I don't think it's a sin.

But if you think it's a sin then you should do it.
Edit
I've read a lot of the other answers. And I'm still not sure I agree with the Ney side completely.

I'm a married woman. I've also been in the military. If I had to go away for a long time, and my body was reacting. I don't think it's a sin to think of my husband and have an orgasm. The bible says that the bed is un-defiled if you're married. You can't lust after a spouse, because the biblical definition of lust is Sinful longing. I can't sinfully long for my husband.

Also I read the verses that Jasin used and her source site and none of those verses relate directly to masturbation. Lust, yes. Fornication, yes. But, not masturbation.

1 Peter 2:11-12 (King James Version)
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

12Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

James 1:14-15

14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

2 Timothy 2:22
22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Exodus 20:17
17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Matthew 5:27-28 (King James Version)

27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Masturbation is also instinctive. Many toddlers masturbate (not to be gross), and they don't even know what sex is. So is it really sexual immorality? Is wanting an orgasm immorality? Or, does God point out, lusting after people, coveting someone's wife, or looking at women as sexual objects for a reason? Does he point out every man to have one wife and every wife to have one husband for a reason? I mean read Song of Solomon. The Bible has a book that deals with sexual desire in a positive way. So not all sexual desire is lust, right?

i don't think its the act itself that is wrong...but it's what you are thinking about....for instance...while you masturbate you are thinking about that hot guy down the road, or an ex boyfriend..something like that..then yes it's wrong. you are lusting after someone you aren't married to. so if you are going to masturbate, just concentrate on how good it feels instead of a particular person.

Although the Bible doens't specifically say anything about this- it does give us some guidlelines. The Bible says we should not have lust in our heart or commit adultry/ And obviously when you are doing this you must be thinking of someone- So there is lust- and the Bible clearly says to FLEE from sexual sin. And to add- yes it is an addiction or becomes one and we are slave to whatever rules us.

For men - it can be wrong - remember the "spilling of one's seed" commandment? You can masturbate as long as you don't, you know, go too far. Or if you've had a vasectomy, and there's no chance of a "spill".

For women - go ahead - Nothing against it. Wouldn't do it in public tho, but that's more cultural than biblical.

masturbation is NOT a sin, PERIOD. If it is a sin, then no man over the age of 15 is in heaven.

no. But like everything else, it is a sin if it's abused. It's as normal as apple pie. Just don't get caught like George on Seinfeild did.

it is not mentioned in the bible, and ever other sexual way is. It is good to calm your sex drive till u r married. It helps with lusting with your eyes. Just don't watch porno or magazines while u do it.

i would like to think that god unlike you, has something more productive to do with his time than to worry about me masturbating...

why will he contradict himself again? didn't he create us and all that is in us? that is including you getting off on yourself....

stop worrying about it, he doesn't care about you playing with your noonie, he has starving children, innocent people being killed by our president, and old ladies getting their asses kicked on camera by a 6'5" guy ahead of you in line...
