Whenever I tell him to do something that he doesn't want to.. he pretends that he doesn't understand and does something different. Like if I tell him 'Go sleep with the kids'.. which is his night time ritual.. if he doesn't want too...he will pretend that I said "Go to bed' and run happily to his bed, pretending that he is obeying SO nicely... He never gets away with it... I know he understands.. he does this alot.. pretends he doesn't know what we are saying. It never works.. why does he try? It is cute as heck.. but is it dumb of him to keep trying? He is generally very intellegnet

This just proves that he IS very intelligent! Dogs are so much smarter than we give them credit for. My mini dachshund pulls stunts like this...if I'm fussing on her, she will stare straight ahead and never make eye contact. I guess this is her version of ignoring me!!!! :)

Well, the dog is intelligent but not that intelligent. You saying "sleep with the kids", he might just interpret it as "go to sleep" and that's why he runs to his own bed. Maybe use a different command without the same word in it to lessen confusion for the dog.
Your dog is already doing well, my dog will not even go to his own bed when i tell him to

A dog is a 5 year old with mental deficiencies...pleasant as all get out, but not *quite* understanding what you say.

The most intelligent dog is *generally* less intelligent than your kids, but what they know, they know well. It's a case of he wants to play.

He also wants to please you, and playing please him while pleasing you...you both win.

Or, it could be that one of the kids accidentally kicked him in the ribs recently, accidentally or no, and he doesn't want to, so he can avoid another kick in the ribs!

It sounds like your dog completely believes that he is the leader, not you, and if it doesn't suit him, he doesn't need to listen. I would enroll him in obedience training or hire a trainer to work on ways to reassert yourself as the leader.

dogs will do anything that they can to try and make you believe that they are smarter then you and that you in fact are the one who doesn't understand. It's just what they do...if you think dogs are stubborn try cats!!

He tries because he thinks your a push over and so he keeps trying. It's really not dumb at all if you really think about it it's really very smart.

normally dogs only understand short commands. when you told him go sleep with the kids, he probably only heard go sleep and then ran off to do it.
