If you have a connecting flight that you booked as a connection (i.e. you didn't buy two separate tickets from different airlines or anything weird like that), then the airline will automatically transfer your bags to the second flight, and they'll give you boarding passes for both flights when you check in the first time, so you don't even have to go past the security checkpoint again when you make your connection. The exception would be if you have an international flight, and are making the connection in a different country than you started in, then you may have to clear customs at the connecting airport rather than the final destination. In that case you have to get your bags, clear customs, re-check your bags (or at least drop them off at specific location, depending on the airport), and clear security again.
When the airline tells you to check in 2 hours before departure, they mean it regardless of whether you're checking bags or not. You have to be at the gate at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, or the airline can give your seat to a standby passenger. Many airlines let you check in online and print your boarding pass from home. If you do that, and don't have to check in, then you just have to clear security and get to your gate. That generally won't take an hour and a half, so you can cut it a bit closer than 2 hours. But if you haven't traveled much before (and it sounds like you haven't), then I'd recommend you play it safe and get there the full 2 hours before anyway. Waiting around the airport isn't much fun, but it sure beats missing your flight. Don't start playing the "how close can I cut it" game until you have a good sense of how long it will take to clear security and find your gate. And for an inexperienced traveler those things take a lot longer, so don't rely on estimates from frequent travelers for how long it should take.

RE:
DO u have to check in at a connecting flight?your luggage is on that flight anyway so they know you're coming
When the airline says you have to check in 2 hours before departure that's with luggage correct? if you only have carry on then it doesn't matter?

you don't have to check in 2 hours before, but it is recommended so this way you can solve a few problems, if they come up, but that applies for both you and your baggage. If you have just a carry-on it doesn't matter but if you only have carry-ons i still recommend showing up at least 45 minutes early, because you still have some problems to avoid like checking in and security. About the connecting flight, It all depends if you booked a flight and the airline flew you on a connecting flight, if you are, then you wouldn't have to worry about it, the baggage gets transferred to the other plane to go to your final destination, and you don't have to check in again. I have experience because I fly on so many flights that have connections.

im a travel agent and have checked with regards to this before with many airlines. It depends on whether the connecting airlines has any agreements with each other and depending on the airports. Its not whether the tickets are issued as 1 ticket or as seperate tickets. For example, I issued 1 ticket for SQ/LH connecting at Frankfurt airport. Passenger going from singapore to certain germany sector only flown by LH. Both SQ (singapore airlines) and LH (Lufthansa airlines) are star alliances. However, when my passenger reaches Frankfurt on SQ, he MUST collect his luggage and check in for the connecting LH flights.
Generally speaking, as long as the connecting flights is not the same carrier, passsenger has to check in again. Think about it, most of the times, the first carrier that passenger is taking cant even see the seat map or type of aircraft for that connecting flight, how do they allocate a seat and issue a boarding pass to the passenger?

Remember the new rules about liquids, and wear shoes you can slip on and off. Even with just carry on, check in early! Some airlines assign seats or boarding order by who comes first, also, if you don't like your seat you might have a better chance of switching it. Also, if there is a security delay, you have a better chance of beating the crowd by already being at the gate.

Assuming you bought your trip from BOS to RSW as 1 ticket and not BOS to ATL and then ATL to RSW separately. If everything was bought as 1 ticket, then yes the airline will transfer your luggage and the next time you see your bags will be at RSW.
