the indian armed forces contain three separate wings:
the army,navy and airforce.
the army is currently 1.3 million strong with 500,000 reserves and a further one million para-military forces.totally it is the second largest force in the world.
the airforce is the fourth largest in the world.combat aircraft include su-30,mirage 2000,mig-29 and also the mig-25 the fastest aircraft on earth (3.5 mach) (it is not the blackbird).
the navy is the fifth largest in the world

some lesser known facts:

indian forces have captured the largest no. of POWs since ww2- 93000 soldiers of the pakistan army during the 1971 war.

india has won the largest tank battle after world war 2 again during the 1971 war.

the indian army has fought,and won against the pakistanis on the highest battlefield in the world- siachien glacier,during the kargil war.

the national defence academy which provides training to soldiers,is the toughest in the world

the national security guards (NSG) is one of the most elite fighting force in the world.

britain is not the only nation to recruit gurkhas,india has 8 gurkha regiments each having about 10 battalions which further consist of 800 men each,making it about 25 times larger than the british gurkha brigade.

It has the latest in Russian, Chinese, Israeli and South African equipment.

The U.S. has found India to be a big challenge in war games. Generally in wargames, the allies have so few weapons, it's basically a game where both sides are fighting against another American unit. With India, it's a true red and blue war game at least so far.

Outside the wargames it's a different story. India has rebel forces in its territory and has yet to be able to take territory from both the locals and Pakistan, it has claimed as its own.
