When you arrange to have your dog spayed you can discuss the procedure and the risks with your veterinarian before the surgery so you know better what to expect. The procedure follows basically the same course no matter where you go. The puppy should have her food withheld for eight to twelve hours before the surgery. Anesthesia can cause nausea and vomiting which can be very dangerous in a sedated dog as they can inhale or aspirate the vomit, causing obstruction or leading to pneumonia.

The puppy will often have a catheterplaced in her arm for access to the vein for medications, and pre-anesthetics. You may notice a small patch of hair shaved away where the catheter was placed. Once she is sedated, she will have a breathing tube placed down her throat which will be administering a mixture of anesthetic gas and oxygen. These are monitored closely while she is asleep. During the surgery, both the uterus and ovaries are removed. The surgery time varies depending on the puppy’s age and whether she was in heat at the time of the surgery. Even her breed will make a little difference to how quick the surgery goes. Deep chested dogs like Boxers and Dobermans are a little more difficult as their bone structure tends to hide things well.

Dogs that are overweight are more difficult as well due to the excess of fatty tissues surrounding the organs. Generally the surgery will probably take about 20 minutes or so. After the surgery the dog will wake up within a few minutes, but remain groggy for several hours. She will probably be given an antibiotic and anti-pain shot and kept for observation until the next day. It is very important that she stay quiet and confined for the first 24 hours. Once she goes home, she will need to stay confined inside and be kept as quiet as possible. No stairs, no running or playing, and no walks for about a week. You will want to feed her a bit lightly and offer water regularly but not continually the first day so she doesn’t over do it. She will be thirsty, but monitor her intake in case of vomiting.

She will return to the vet in ten to fourteen days for the suture removal and evaluation to return to her normal routine.

When a female dog is desexed or spayed the surgery performed is an OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY.
Steps taken:
1. Premedication / pain relief about 1/2 - 1 hour prior to surgery. Subcut injection (just under the skin - calms patient down ready for intravenous injection, means less anaesthetic is required - better for kidneys- makes recovery smoother, pain relief for post surgery.
2. Intravenous injection of a liquid anaesthetic - this makes the animal deep enough to tube them
3. Intubation - placement of an endotrachael tube down trachea (air pipe) of dog - then attached to anaesthetic machine which delievers oxygen and gaseous anaethetic.
4. Abdomen is clipped and scrubed ready for surgery
5. Surgeon (Vet) makes an incision with a scalpel through the skin and muscle layers of the midline abdmen entering the abdomen cavity.
6. The ovaries are located, clamped and ligated (tied off) before being removed (one on each side of body - located near kidneys)
7. The the uterine tube is clamped and ligated near cervix and removed
8. A layer of sutures are placed in the muscle layer underlining the skin this is an absorbable suture
9. Non absorbable sutures used to suture up the skin layer.
Surgery will take 20-30 mins for a small dog and up to an hour for a large inseason dog spay.
Pain can be experienced by the patient however if adequate pain relief is given as a premed then they shouldn't be uncomfortable post surgery.

The vet has to make a small incision into the abdomen to get to the uterus and ovaries (which, along with the fallopian tubes, are removed). With proper medication, the dog is in very little pain. They are under anesthesia while they are in surgery, and then most vets give the dog an anti-inflammatory/pain medication shot the day that they do the procedure. It usually only takes about 45 minutes to do a spay.

Spaying a dog is equivalent to a hysterectomy in humans. It is done under general anesthetic. The dog is kept for a couple of days or so to watch for complications. Often they give pain killers to use as needed. After a couple of weeks the dog will go back to get the stitches removed. I have just gone through this process with a foster dog. I got her a couple days after surgery, and because she didn't know me, the house or the other dogs she kept herself pretty quiet. If your dog is really frisky, I might put her in a crate now and then until the stitches are healed. However, when I had my sneaky little dachs spayed she removed her own stitches much to my vet's and my surprise.

In case you are serious and really don't know: By "spaying", I can only assume you are referring to a female and yes, they do open them up ( about 7-10 stitches worth) and remove the overies. They are knocked out and there is not much chanch of pain. They will be sore for a few days and it is not recommended for them to "jump". Surgery takes about 30 minutes if you have a good Vet.
Now if we are talking about a male...whole nother story. Males go under the anesthetic too, but no REAL cutting that will require stiches. Again, no jumping for a day or 2 (don't worry, he won't even want to). Males recover faster and are cheaper to do.
Either way, a good idea to do. Un-neutered animals spend a lifetime confused as nature calls and there is nothing they can do. It's cruel to put them through this. Also it is a proven fact, they live longer.
Good luck.

First off, your dog is sedated, then prepared (belly shaved and sterilized with an iodine mixture (forget the mixture, but has that yellow iodine look), then you dog is taken into the surgical room and gently laid on the table. The dog is secured in straps on his or her back. The dog is draped with disposable surgical coverings (hole cut for surgical site). The female dog is cut between 2-3 in. A spay hook is used to "hook" the uterus and it is gently pulled up, tied off and cut out. The entire uterus and ovary is taken out on both sides of the dog. The dog is sewn up and put into a cage to recover. She will stay at the vet over night. She should be confined for 10 days (NO jumping at all).

A male dog is cut on the sheath about 2in, and the testicle is pushed out of the scrotum to the incision and out, then the connecting veins and "tubes" are cut. The second is done the same way. The male dog is then sewn up and placed in a cage to recover.

I did a search and found this...it is a little more detailed...Male cats are neutered a little differently...the scrotum is actually cut and the testicle is pulled through the hole.

Yes they do open them up. The incision is usually about 2-3" long (may be a bit longer in larger breeds of dogs or older dogs). There is some pain after since it is surgery. Most vets wil lsend the dog home with pain meds after. It usually only takes from 15 minutes to half an hour. In older large/giant dogs it can take a bit longer.longer.

ok first of all the IV fluids are not in basic terms for hydration (yet it rather is one element). in addition they enable common accessibility to a vein so if something is going incorrect for the period of the surgical technique medicine could be immediately administered immediately into your canines blood flow to maintain them. undergo in recommendations that together as a spay is a typical commonplace technique it continues to be a surgical technique and does nevertheless incorporate negative aspects. IV fluids are a needed precaution to ensuring your puppy maintains to be healthful and robust. As for the discomfort meds... bypass get significant surgical technique to have your tubes tied and tell me how nicely you will do with out discomfort medicine. Your canines does sense discomfort you realize. Being decrease open is painful. that's wonderful to grant your canines discomfort meds so as that they do no longer... you realize... go through. I propose fairly you're already spending an outstanding chew of exchange in this so what's the greater effective value to be sure your canines maintains to be secure and is comfortable afterwards?
