Do not stick tissue in the nose. Sit down and lean forward, this will prevent you from swallowing the blood which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Squeeze the soft portion of your nose, apply pressure for at least 5 minutes. If it is still bleeding continue to hold for 10 more minutes. If after 15 minutes it continues to bleed seek medical treatment.

Most common ones are caused by dry heat or air during the winter months due to no moisture in the air because some run their furnaces a lot... invest in a humidifier as well.

Place an ice pack on the back of the neck and one across the bridge of the nose. DO NOT blow your nose. You can gently place tissue into the nose but if the bleeding is significant it will then go down the back of the throat.

If the bleeding has been going on consistently for more than one hour, it is time to seek medical help!!!!!

I am a school nurse and deal with nosebleeds on almost a daily basis. Do not tilt head back. Pinch nose just below hard part and above nostrils. I bleeding is severe, use tampons, yes tampons (seen in the er when i was in hospital nursing). They are super absorbent, obviously. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes or doesn't lighten up, then seek attention at your local emergency room.

First DON'T TILT YOUR HEAD BACK!!!! a lot of people think your supposed to but don't! The blood will drain onto your stomach and you will throw it up. Pinch your nose starting at the bone close to the top and hold all of the cartilage and lean forward, other then that, wait it out.

Pinching your nose for 3 minutes should do the trick, the cold bag on the neck never worked for me.
If you stick tissue in your nose and it stops, pulling it out may reopen the scab so try the pinching first... if it won't stop in 15 minutes get yourself to emergency.
I had them so frequently they finally figured out there was hole that needed to be filled when they cauterized it I never had them again.

Brandi d had the right answer but in stead of your finger put a piece of gauze of a cotton and push. you have to push really really hard. you should leave it there for a while and then check it. never plow your nose while or directly after it stops bleeding.

Tilt your head forward so you don't swallow the blood. take your finger and put pressure on the inside of your upper lip above your two front teeth. push hard. I work at a hospital and we have a Filipino doctor that swears this works and it does I have saw it many times. If it wont stop after a while you may need to go to the er to have it Cauterized.

direct pressure, lean your head back slightly, block the nostrils with tissue to cause it to clot. NEVER blow your nose when it's bleeding, that dislodges the little clots and causes everything to start all over again.
