I was told by my family doctor that I was slightly underweight and that it won't be harmful to gain 5-15 pounds. I know I have to eat 3 full meals a day, and snacks in between; however, I was also advised that working out would help my weight gain diet. I thought that working out causes you to burn calories..? Is there a certain method to weight gain? Do I eat before I work out and then again after?? What are the best foods to eat? (Mature responses only).

To help you gain some weight, do some weight lifting to strengthen and tone your muscle. Also Yoga and Pilates are good too.

Cardiovascular exercises are the ones that are best for calorie burning and fat loss, but you should include some cardio work to keep that system running efficiently, too!

Before a workout, it's good to have something that can be metabolized relatively quickly, but that won't make you feel too full or sluggish. There are many protein shakes/smoothies or some people eat a banana and drink a sports beverage before a workout. During the workout, keep sipping to make sure you replace the fluids you are sweating out.

Eat plenty of protein in general to help your body gain muscle rather than fat. You still want to watch your fat and salt, because even though you have a good metabolism, you could still get high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Take a multivitamin and eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, too.

I work out 3 - 4 times a week and don't lose a pound even though I want to. I don't lose because I like ice cream.

You can workout without losing weight, just add a snack after work out.

Best of luck !

If you workout by lifting weights you will gain muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. You will gain muscle weight if you continue to eat enough protein at each meal and with your snacks.Search the web for a protein calculator. It will guide you in the amounts to eat for your body weight and level of excercise. A body fat scale is very helpful in telling your the truth about your weight. Included with the scale is a information on what is healthy and normal also what would be "atheletic".
