Have you ever smelled a burning tire? I have, they stink! I live on the US/Mexican border and on cold winter mornings you can smell them as their odor wafts across the Rio Grande. I feel sorry for the poor people who have to rely on them for warmth but it is not good to burn them.

Um, NO!! The others have it right. Really bad for air quality and breathing.

They are also not good for landfills. I was just at landfill and it ends up that tires can make a landfill unstable- they also work their way up to the top of a landfill and pop out on top of it eventually. Crazy. Best thing to do with tires is to recycle them. They are made into all types of playground equipment and mixed with asphalt for tracks and other pathways.

No! They're better off in landfills then being burned. Not only does it create toxic smoke, but it pollutes the air. You can usually take tires to a recycling plant to be re-treaded anyways.

Very definately not. Pure rubber burns very cleanly. However, tires have a number of other chemicals--and burning them produces some decidedly toxic gases.
