Rock climbing will tone your arms, but not in an exaggerated way. None of the female climbers I know have arms like body builders. Unlike the guys, who tend to Tarzan their way up, women mostly prefer to use proper technique ;-) But even the women do have ripped shoulder muscles. Of course, you won't actually see any muscles that are covered by fat. You could have a six pack abdomen but if you also have a healthy layer of fat, the only way you'll see those muscles is on an X-Ray picture. Abs and other muscles only show when your body fat drops below 14% (8% for men). Also, there is no such thing as spot burning fat - you either lose fat over your entire body or not at all. Climbing twice or three times a week is most effective. That goes for getting better at climbing, as well as for toning the muscles you use most. The same goes for pretty much any sport - twice to three times a week is most effective. But even if you only go once a week, you'll be sure to notice a difference... and you do sound pretty busy with other things :-) Best wishes with everything!

Im a girl and I rock climb 3 or 4 times a week. I'm pretty strong, I can flash v3s and send v5s and v6s (Im a boulder climber, I dont like heights lol) There arent many women at the gym I climb at so I have a habit of climbing like the boys. If climbing made women buff, I would be haha fortunately my arms are NOT big. Climbing wont give you big muscles like weigh training. Big muscles add weight and to be an efficient climber you have to have small, light, but dense muscles which the body seems to know and automatically wont add bulk so dont worry about it. Look up Dave Graham, hes a great climber but hes stick thin. Look at any of the best climbers and you'll see that very few of them are buff. One of the best climbers I know personally that can do a one arm, one PINKY pull up (its insane!) looks like just a regular slim toned guy. Climbing will definitely make your muscles more toned and defined but wont make them slimmer. For that you need to do a lot of cardio which it sounds like your doing so thats great! stick with it! the stronger and better you get the more fun it is! Some tips to get stronger: Go at least twice a week if you want to start climbing the harder stuff. even if you're doing other arm exercises rock climbing is the only thing that works your tendons to that intensity especially if you start using crimps, so even if you have super strong muscles you may be prone to a tendon injury if you dont work them on a regular basis. Also, give campusing a try. Its HARD in the beginning but keep at it and it will get you strong fast! its also insanely fun to do once you're strong (its also really fun to see the guys faces when they see a girl campusing haha). A good tip to prevent injury is to work your extensor muscles. many climbers have super strong flexors ( the muscle that close your hand and help you hold on to the holds) but rarely work the opposing muscle groups which can cause tendon pain. the easiest way ive found to work the extensors is to get a thick rubber band, bring all your finger tips together, put the rubber band around them and then try to open you fingers.
