I remember maybe two years ago walking by the Plasma tvs and seeing out of this world prices, 5,000 and up. I went to circuit city today and I couldnt believe my eyes, WOW! 50 Inch Plasma tvs for 2,000! 42 inch Plasma tvs for 1299! What caused this dramatic price drop in two years? And is the quality improving or is it the same?

costs of production are reducing and there have been price wars by competitors and new technolgy is pushing out the old at reduced prices.

The new technology is theoretically better(higher resolution) but only if you are sitting very close to the TV will you see any difference. There is currently very little 1080 resolution programming.
50 inch plasma HDTVs with 720 resultion for $2000 are still best buy, but if you have money to burn go for the 1080 resolution.

It is called supply and demand. New equipment costs a lot of money to manufacture and somehow some of that cost is passed on to the consumer. Those who want to be the first at owning these products pay for them where money is no object. When enough have been sold to recoup some of the money that went into the design and manufacture of the product the price begins to fall so it becomes available to more people and when more people buy the price can drop again till they make a profit. Then they start to design newer and better products which will be ready for the next saga .

I remember a 106 c.m.Plasma Panel (no tuner) for sale in Australia for $28,000 ten years ago .

This drop in price is typical in tech products.
Computers have dropped even more dramatically over the years; what you can get now would have been worth tens of thousands of dollars ten years ago.

More plants are able to make these TVs in abundance, meaning the supply is way up. Also, plants that used to make big tube TVs have switched over their production lines.
You can find a 32" tube for a few hundred bucks now; they used to go for $1500. Same with memory sticks, DVD writer drives, printers and software.

Good news for those of us who waited!

The price drop is good for consumers which means more sales.

supply and demand plus more competition for manufacturers, lol. (good for consumers)
