I'm looking to do about a 50/50 split of road and trail riding. My friend said to get a hardtail and he does about the same amount of riding. My local bike shop (CycleCraft in Morris county NJ) had a Scott Voltage YZ3 and a Trek 4300. Of the two, which has the better features? I was also looking at some Giant bikes and Fisher bikes online. Are the two that my shop has in stock worth looking at or should I also pursue finding a place with some Giant/Fisher bikes??

I think that both Scott and Trek are very good begginer bikes. Giant also is very good, but if it's your first bike, then I would think it's better to have your bike shop support the bike.

I don't know which components each have, but if they're similarily priced, most probably they will be similar level. How they fit is very important. Try test riding them both (the Scott and Trek) and see how each feels.

Your size and weight affect the answer quite a bit. A bike like the Trek 7000 or 7300 are very good fits for up to medium sized adults and teenagers. If you intend to go longer distances (50+ miles) or serious climbing, you may find it cheaper to own two bikes.

Giant Rainier, Trek Fuel,Kona Stuff, Trek 4300 ( add something like a Marzocchi suspension from Blue Sky Cycling website ----www.blueskycycling.com) are cool bikes. Get a bike with SRAM 9.0 w/ matching shifters, Hayes disc brakes, Race Face crankset, Avid Juicy 9 brake levers, and Mavic disc-compatible rims----
