I heard that frozen fruits are picked up ripe and ready to pack; whereas, fruits on shelves of grocery store are picked up earlier so that they can be delivered to the store...

fresh.... the frozen brands actually loose some enzymes that can benefit you... these enzymes die off in the freezing process :o)

I have read, either in "Experience Life" magazine and/or "Energy Times" magazine (maybe "Vegetarian Times", too; I read a few health/fitness magazines) that frozen is better because they are frozen soon after picking and therefore the enzymes are locked in sooner and with "fresh" they break down. Also, fresh makes me leery in that with the way grocery customers pick and prod at them when selecting their fruit. Canned, I have heard/read is almost as good as frozen, but as it has been said, they might have added salt (in the veggies) and sugar (in the fruit). There are some brands of fruit I won't buy canned just because corn syrup and/or high fructose corn syrup is added. That defeats the puprose of the fruit and the wonderful, yummy natural sweetness it contains.

For the most part, my husband and I buy frozen (fruit and vegetables), partially because they make great smoothies (the fruit, we've not tried the veggies) and we usually do smoothies a couple of times a week for breakfast. Also, I steam my veggies so less of the good stuff is cooked out.

I have heard that frozen food is destroyed by the freezing process. Take a piece of fruit and eat part of it fresh, then freeze the other part. The longer it is frozen, the more the nutrient is destroyed and the less flavor it has. Try it and find out for yourself, so i would choose fresh over frozen.

Actually you are right. Frozen and canned fruits and veggies have more nutrients because they are processed quicker than it takes for the fresh to reach your local grocery store. However, you have to watch for added sugar and salt especially in canned varieties.

I've also heard that frozen fruit is at the peak of it's freshness. I read that frozen actually has more nutrients than fresh because of what you said in your question.

I think that both frozen and fresh fruits contain the same vitamins.

In many ways it is true. But fresh - raw, uncooked versions that are fresh picked are best-= but we seldom get fruits and veggies freshly picked. Thats why the buy local movement is gaining momentum.

Try to find organic or locally grown fruits. Vine or tree ripened fruit is hard to find.

Fresh is always your best bet. Any processing to your food reduces its nutritional value.
