It the childhood, children get frequent sore throat infections.
some infections extends to tonsils and can lead to pus formation in tonsils. In the past days doctors were removing tonsils when child get tonsillitis because if it is not resolved then child can get frequent upper respiratory tract infection.
After that period doctors came to know that tonsils are lymphiod organ and important in immunity developement.
so now a days doctors do as much as try to preserve tonsils in tonsillitis patients. Antibiotics can do this work instead of removal of them. Last resort is removal of them when not treated with antibiotics

The numerous answers you now have are from some people who had their tonsils removed and they have the same thread in their answers that enlarged tonsils pose health risks so a doctor cuts them out. Swelling is caused by infected tonsils due to inflammation which is what tonsilitis is - inflamed tonsils. You have two tonsils. Both are removed if any are removed. The risk to health can be so severe that the patient will need a quick procedure to remove the tonsils.
Peter T. aka de, I still have my tonsils, but my appendix was removed in 1988 when I was age 29

I had mine removed when I was about 11 because I was constantly getting infections and they were always so swollen my throat was almost blocked. They removed my adenoids at the same time. As a result of this whenever I am sick I get to throw up through my nose which is rather nasty.
Nowadays they try not to remove them - my daughter has had trouble with hers for years but they just keep giving her antibiotics.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.

Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.

i got mine removed because a bacterial infection in that area had become so severe that removing the tonsils was the best way to proceed. i dont know why having tonsilitis 3 times in one year makes you a candidate, as the tonsils are lymph nodes and should be helpful in combating throat infections.

That rarely happens anymore. That used to be the procedure for simple swelling of the tonsils. Pretty archaic, I say. Sort of like blood-letting. In 2007 there's no need to get such a procedure done. It would have to be a very extreme case for that, or a very poorly-educated doctor.

People get them removed when they have frequent strep throat infections.

I had strep throat 10 times in 12 months when I was 4 so I had my tonsils removed.

tonsils are just something in the body that really has no purpose. some people are prone to infection when having their tonsils still so removing them helps stop the infection and keeps them healthy. getting sick and taking many antibiotics to rid yourself of something like tonsilitis your body will become immune to these drugs and it will compromise your immune system
