I am having a total abdominal hysterectomy on Monday. My Dr's are aware of my use of hydrocodone due to pain management. I just wonder if it will affect my recovery when I have a high tolerance already...Any help is appreciated!

It will not affect your surgery, nor your anesthesia at all. Before your procedure you will be given a form to follow with all of the medicines you are taking. Generally before sugery, (the week before) you cannot take any medicine which causes blood thinning; Either blood thinners or medicine like ibuprofen or aspirin. The morning of sugery you can generally take your daily meds with a sip of water up til four hours before your procedure. Hydrocodone (either lortab or norco, which contains acetaminophen) will not affect the anesthesia at all. The aspirin in the lortab ASA (if you are taking (aspirin plus hydrocodone), or the ibuprofen in Vicoprofen (hydrocodone plus ibuprofen) might affect your surgery due to blood-thinning properties of the aspirin, and you should ask your doctor if this is okay. The hydrocodone itself will not affect the anesthesia or surgery at all. But you should check with your doctor before the procedure (the day before to be safe) to see what food, drink and medicines are allowed. Good luck!

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. A hydrocodone overdose can be fatal, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Overdose symptoms may include slow breathing and heart rate, severe drowsiness, muscle weakness, cold and clammy skin, pinpoint pupils, and fainting.

All narcotics effect respiration and those can pose a problem during the use of anesthesia. But since your doctor knows this is will be in your records and discussed with the anesthesiologist. Any adjustment that might be required will be done to avoid any complication.

I was on Percocet for a torn rotartor cuff for a month prior to my surgery. During my discussion with my suregon and anesthesiologist this was brought up and they explained that it was taken into account regarding my care will under.

Good luck with your surgery.

I would talk to the surgeon and about this, before the surgery. Make double sure that all of you are on the "same page".

I had a TAH and was told not to eat/drink anything, x number of hours before surgery and also to not take anything medicine wise, like Ibuprofen, etc. They can effectively take care of any pain before/during/after surgery for you.

Only the doctors/anesthetist dealing with you, know about you and your medical history.

Oh, and one thing no one told me to ask for from the doctor before my surgery, was to have him pull my stomach tighter when closing me up at the end of the surgery. I never had thought about it and only read about it, three months after my TAH. If you don't ask them to do it and they don't automatically do it, you'll always have a large 'pooch' under your belly button. Thought you might want to know.

If your doctor knows, you should be ok. Just do NOT take any after midnight before the surgery or anything else by mouth including water.
