We beat Japan and Germany 60 years ago so why am I driving a Japanese and German car?

I was told if we lost WW two I'd be speaking a foreign language. We won but I'm driving foreign cars. What's the difference?

Note: Wife drives the car from Germany.

nooo... the reason you are driving a german or japanese car is because once we won the World War 2, we help install a democracy in both countries. After that occured, capitalism type institutions flourished, which allowed for the manufacture of many foreign wanted goods. Like it or not, Germany and Japan are allies now, and they have a right to sell products to the american people. They buy American products as well (boeing aircraft, for example) and that's how trade is born. We can't keep a stigma like that of other countries, because that isn't how trade will form. Trade is the best way in my opinion to foster peace. Granted, WArs are sometimes necessary countries that trades together, stays together.

Why do certain people act like its "UnAmerican" to buy foreign cars? It's completely stupid to insult and slam someone on the mere fact that they drive a foreign car. There is nothing wrong with that. I could careless whether you own a foreign or domestic car. The American auto industry is dealing with problems that is no elses fault.

And you, not all foreign cars are imported. Some are actually made in the U.S.A! Yes, I said, made in the U.S.A.!

your friend is deeply confused. German cars cost more for a reason... pay more, get more. Japanese cars do not last as long, break down more often, and are nowhere near as safe as a German car. How often do you see a BMW or Mercedez Benz on the side of the road??? I'll tell you I never see them, but i see a lot of japanese cars there.

Because after we whip our enimies, for some reason we have to rebuild them and make sure they get everything they need as far as money and plenty of technology so they can become a world economic power . Then they can take over the country without ever having to pull a trigger to do it. I have to admit though that now they seem to make a decent product. I would never buy one because I beleive you have to support your own U.S made product when you can. I realize that the Japanese have several different plants in this country now so thats another argument altogether, As long as they are operated by american workers.

60 years of resting on our laurels, thinking we're the best, and acting like it was true. We've had nothing to struggle for and have been coasting, while the defeated had to struggle to rebuild and excel. Also, German and Japanese cultures do seem to stress education, hard work, and excellence in design and execution. America, for a long time, has stressed marketing and appearance over performance.

Because the American corporate cartel went to work for the Defense Dept instead of back to pre-war free enterprise and open market competition.

Germany and Japan on the other hand were not allowed (by the Americans) to remain in the arms business.

Bribing Senators, presidents and general is better risk-free business than paying advertisers and advancing design etc.

Even though we came close to turning both countries upside down, they had the knowledge to rebuild, knowledge that they had previously. They had the expertise, and acted upon then well, the were never too complacent, thats why these two countries are one of the best exporters of technology to the world.
