to a thick-headed family member that my husband has been diagnosed with a substantially herniated disc that his doctors feel need surgery, and the family member insists that this can all be solved by a trip to an acupuncturist?

I really appreciate your answers... we are having trouble explaining this to them (but like you've said, maybe it's not their business) as they have issues with us spending thousands of dollars that we do not have on surgery, when "It's only $60 to go to an acupunturist", and they think we're being stubborn for not at least trying it, when we feel it's at best useless, and possibly harmful, as it could mask his pain and he could further hurt himself...

You politely thank him/her for the input and then proceed to get your husband the treatment he needs. There's no explaining something to this person who refuses to respect the decision your husband has already made with the guidance of his doctors.

If you have tried explaining to them the need for the surgery then maybe its time to bring in a 3rd party, it might help to take them with you to the doctor and have them hear exactly what it is and why its important to get this procedure done. Acupuncture can be a great thing and maybe even try it once to see if it may relieve some pain (although I don't think it will correct the problem), there is no harm in going to an acupuncturist and that way you can possibly meet in the middle with this family member by trying and acknowledging their suggestion. They think that they are doing the right thing because they care about you and surgery is a big step. I also wanted to tell you to do your research before surgery, get a 2nd..3rd...opinion before you decide on what to do...(i hope you don't think I am being rough or judgmental). I understand what your going through. Its hard when the only thing you want is compassion and understanding. First try explaining to him/her very nicely the facts and if they don't understand then take them with you to the appt so they can ask questions to the doctor which may help them feel more comfortable with the idea and if this fails then let them know that you are asking for support and understanding, they may not even know that their suggestion is bothering you.

Some people are to opinionated and you will never be able to change their minds. I don't think an acupuncturist would be able to solve this problem. I am not a big fan of acupuncture. I have studied and tried many different doctors and I never saw any results. There are some people, like your family members, that swear by it.

Your husband has to do what he feels is right for himself. It's really nobody else's business.

Tell them you are willing to try acupuncture for pain control but that the surgery will still be needed for long term relief. Holistic health is worth a try. Good luck.

explain that poking needels into skin will not solve a misplaced bone :: just like taking medicine will only delay a rotting tooth ache. best of luck, i hope the surgery goes well and he is safe.
