The Pope, by no means can wash you clean. As a matter of fact. The Pope needs to be washed clean just like you and I. The only way that we can be washed clean is by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Because Jesus allowed himself to be crucified on the cross, and because God rose him from the dead, all of your and my sins can be washed away. Romans 10: 9 If thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead you shall be saved." In other words, salvation is the washing away of our sinful nature. Jesus has set me free and now I am clean. His spirit dwells in me. 1 John 3: 9 For whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God." The pope can not cause you to be born of God, so when he dies, do not worry, because it is only by repenting of your sinful ways and believing on the name of the Lord Jesus can we be saved.

Does the Bible say that the head of the church shall be the pope? Or that he is to be succeeded after death? No. The Bible clearly states that the head of the church is Christ. Not Peter, not pope. In fact, he even told his disciples that not one of them was greater than the other, so it couldn't have been Peter. The pope's "washing away of sins" would completely defeat the purpose of Jesus ever coming to earth, would it not? So, you see, the pope is placed in his position by people, not by God or Christ.

The church does not teach that the Pope can wash us clean of sin. He is not worshiped like God. He is our spiritual father. He is the pastor of the entire church.

The Pope is not worshipped like God.
The Pope is respected like the successor of Simon Peter, the Rock upon which Jesus build His Church.
John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
With love in Christ.
