I learned in one of my classes that there are 4 sources of Christian Authority. They are:
1. Scripture
2. Tradition
3. Reason
4. Experience
Different denominations will weight these differently. Tradition is big in the Catholic church, but not so much in Protestantism. Some branches of protestantism are very big on experience - for example, the charismatic and pentecostal churches that stress things like speaking in tongues, etc.
Under reason can also come things like science and philosophy. This is a source of authority, because it is necessary to know how the world works to know how to apply the other sources.

Archealogy, among other things. Keep in mind that the Bible isn't one book, it's basically a collection of 66 books, by many different authors over 3,500 years. Yet it all ties together and includes prophecies that come true hundreds of years later (Let's see you or me do that). Some scholars have put together books that go further into this. You can download some of them. This site has downloadable books, including some that are historical books outside of the Bible that support Christianity. http://www.infilled.net/Church_Father_Biographies.html

God's Word is the highest authority that there is .
What other source would you need besides the Bible, which has been the best seller for 100's of years, the most translated into different languages book that ever existed and the greatest Historical document ever printed?

Ha, (or lol as they say now.)
What "other" authority can there be - other than the words of Jesus?
If the words are not from the Holy Spirit or Jesus - they lack power and will be forgotten.
If I wrote or say anything - no one should quote me as an authority. But if the Holy Spirit enters you after reading a statement from someone, you'd know it.
Authority is granted by GOD.
Authority is placed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit to understand and convey the words from GOD to ourselves and others.
This is true for the other religions to, if GOD is not talking to them through their faithfulness, or religious structure then it is not authorized words from GOD either. And so the words will have no power either.
All words of power flow from the authority of the GOD the faith is built for. I have no authority for any religion - therefore no one listens to me. But the power of the faithful is given authority from GOD - and having this power people listen and record their words, so future generations will remember.

Well, history books, for one. History books agree that Jesus lived. Much of the Bible is being proved to be true by geologists, that is, dates and places. There is an excellent series on The History Channel about that. And there are other texts besides the Bible that refer to biblical events and dates.

For a Christian, there is not other source of authority that even compares to the Bible. A Christian is to live their lives ACCORDING to GOD's Word, the Bible is the Word, the Word made flesh is Jesus!

humorous how "Dillicious" and "xoom_ltd" reference the previous testomony (it rather is jewish in foundation) - favoritism and hypocrisy at that's ultimate!!! (or perhaps they are afraid to handle judaism and prefer an greater basic purpose like christianity - cluck cluck!!!). (by potential of ways, that's Leviticus (no longer leveticus)). regardless of the undeniable fact that in case you prefer to cite leviticus, it states that all of us could be bashed for cursing god, the two the community and the alien (leviticus 24:sixteen). yet Leviticus additionally says that "if a stranger is dwelling with you on your land, you shall no longer do him incorrect. The stranger who's dwelling with you would be to you because of the fact the community between you, and you shall love him as your self" (19:33-34). I do admit that the bible is amazingly contradictory. It says to love your enemy, yet there is likewise numerous violence. So in case you %. and choose solely damaging as against do no longer begrudge others who %. and choose valuable verses. so a techniques as 'sciencey' varieties, Louis Pasteur, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, and many others have been dedicated christians who have been additionally pioneers interior the sector of technological know-how (and till you fell asleep in biology type, which it form of feels numerous those so-referred to as atheists have, do no longer forget approximately a pair of little ol' monk by potential of the call of GREGOR Mendel - who began what could be familiar because of the fact the sector of genetics). confident, this question is one-sided. yet i could anticipate no much less from a self-righteous holier than thou flamebaiter. wonderful attempt glade, yet no cigar.

Not all arguments are arguments from authority. Some arguments are arguments from reason. Christians argue from common assumptions, general knowledge, and any premises the person they're trying to pursuade already accepts.
