If they choose to come to America, they should speak English, just like people that go to other countries are expected to speak the local language there.

Well from personal experience, you cant really get far in life in this country without knowing how to speak english, the whole point of migrating here (at least for me) was to seek a better life and as I said before you can't really do that without knowing how to speak english. My point is that if you come here without making "learning english" one of your priorities then there is really no point in coming here at all. I don't think it should be made a requirement, people who choose not to learn the local language are ultimately just hurting themselves. Why wouldn't you want to learn a new language? The ability to explore different cultures is a terrible thing to waste. Why limit your knowledge to one idiom? Learn as many languages as you can.

I think that why they want to do this is because they forgot where their ancestor came from; they forgot the history that many people came to Americans from different language background, different country. And these old immigrants all contributed to the USA.

They forget that the USA is actually a combination of different countries people. I agree that it will make it easier for these new immigrants knowing how to speak English. But it should not be a requirement.

If you make it a requirement for the immigrants, I think this will against the freedom spirit.

Actually English isn't the US' official language, and only 25 have English as an official language. I think all American citizens should have to learn Spanish. I know I am. Foreigners do enough learning English as it is. In the European Union 89% of school children learn English as a second language. In Chile, where I'm on Rotary exchange at the moment, all school children are forced to learn English in order to get into collage. All my fellow European exchange students know English, all of them, they're here to learn their third, forth, or even fifth language. None of my fellow American exchange students know any other language, none of them. It's embarrassing. No I think if anything, the southern states should make learning Spanish a requirement.

Absolutely. When an immigrant comes to the US he/she should be required to speak English. When a US citizen emmigrates to another country they are expected to fit into that society by speaking the national language in question.

Of course when you have thousands of Mexicans crossing illegally everyday bringing drugs, diseases (that our children have been immunized against for years), and a low expectation of living what do you expect? Furthermore we give them priviledges that it takes many US born citizens years to earn.

Yes! It should also be the national language. I don't believe any immigrant should be eligible for citizenship, much less government assistance (food stamps, housing assistance, medicaid, etc.) if they can't bother to learn the language of the country they are in.

It would be a great idea. Why do I get the feeling the taxpayers would have to foot the bill to give them a fighting chance?

You know America, it would be "politically incorrect" to propose such a bill any other way.

Yes, because the United States spends BILLIONS of dollars annually hiring bilingual employees and printing literature in multiple languages. It would save us a lot of time and money.
