I expected a little bruise from where they put the IV, but it's sort of ridiculous....purple and dark red and covers the larger portion of the top of my hand. Is this normal?

Yes, it's common to have bruising after a procedure like insertion of an IV.

But I would go ahead and double check with your dr to be on the safe side. In the mean time try some arnica. This is a special product that is designed to help heal bruises. Check your local drugstore to see if they have it, if not check at a natural health food store or the Latin section of one of your local supermarkets or at a Dollar General if there is one in your area or even an actual Latin market if one is in your area for this product.

yes this is normal because your skin has just suffered from an IV. It's usually normal to get bruises from where you've gotten an IV for a long time....

just like how it's normal to feel pain or a bump when you get a shot/vaccination.

The skin is just irritated because it isn't used to this sort of "thing" inside it.

Don't worry, it'll go away and down.

Rub some ice or salt on it. well, salt takes the swelling away.

ice calms it down.

Totally. Every vein reacts differently to being prodded - TRUST ME, after 2 major surgeries and several other reasons to have an IV in me, every vein is different. Your vein was just punctured by the needle, and leaked some blood out which stayed under your skin. No big. It will go away in a few days. Just... don't hit it on anything. Ha ha.

That is probably typical, expecially if you have lighter skin. This is just from blood that has gotten under the skin from the IV. This should however start to heal quickly after a few days. Your only concerns should be if it doesn't, or if you start to notice infection.

Sometimes. If they had to poke you twice then absolutly. Other times the vien can sometimes "leak" after they take the IV out. I have had black spots over half my arm where I have had IVs taken out.
