When did Detroit become a ward of the Federal Government? Last time I checked Michigan was a big, powerful, industrial state. What's wrong with the people of Michigan saving Detroit? Why should people living in Kansas City or San Diego pay the bill?
I grew up in Southfield, MI, a suburb of Detroit. I know exactly why it's a dead city.

I like Detroit. Used to spend some time there on business. There was nothing better than some beer and kielbasa in Hamtramck or fried chicken at Checkers Bar-B-Q (if you didn't enter through the kitchen). Greektown was good, too.
The greed of the United Auto Workers and some reverse racial hatred ruined Detroit, and maybe even what Walter Reuther called "incompetence in depth", referring to General Motors management. Ralph Nader had his part in it too. Looks like the Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Mitsubishi) have won after all.
Why worry about helping Detroit, or New Orleans? Darwin correctly preached survival of the fittest. Try reading a book or gaining a skill.

Why could people living in Kansas city or San Diego pay the bill? I grew up in Southfield, MI, a suburb of Detroit. i recognize precisely why that's a lifeless city.

Don' t know much about Detroit, but i do know about poverty, despair and hunger.
There must be more to be gained from investing in a country outside the US than from fixing the home-ground.
It would be noble to rebuild a country after it has been so sadly wrecked. But i doubt the motives are that pure. The no bid contracts given to friends and cohorts of present elected officials are a great source of revenue for politicians.
The mayor of Detroit must enlist the help of others and insist on declaring his city a national war zone or disaster area to gain attention to the plight of the domestic front.
Halliburton could invest in iron, photovoltaics plants, wind power industry, all sorts of realistic solutions to the loss of antiquated motor-vehicles and defunct manufactures. One building at a time regain-retain.
in the meantime the people must prove themselves smarter than a wasteful governance. individuals grow summer gardens in empty lots, recycle every piece of trash you find, and resist the despair inflicted upon yourselves.
The best revenge is no offense = it is hard won self sufficiency.

What happened to the wonderful Democrats they voted in? Weren't they supposed to get people like that help, resolve crime issues, feed the poor while they taxed you to death. A prime example of how Democrats could give a rats behind about the poor, the blacks, the down trodden, businesses, or the average guy. All they want is the power so they can tax you to death and get rich with your money. Iraq is being rebuilt with their own money from oil revenues. The US and its allies are not sending money there for that purpose, only for the troops, that is if the Democrats stop playing games and fund the effort. My advise, stop believing the Democrats, and stop voting for them if you want change to actually happen.

Please don't take offense, but I think most people will agree that rebuilding Iraq is much more feasible than rebuilding Detroit. Detroit is pretty far gone, and the crime is so bad that most people just avoid it completely. Frankly, I think Detroit has pretty much had it......

That's what happens when Democrats Rule.
Now you whine, and want us to bale you out.
If Detroit is dying, it needs to die.
All welfare cities are bound to die off. You drove all the taxpayers out.
