I don't think it is hi-jacking ....rather a life-line....people need things and they reach for what helps them ... you need to have faith that it all is understood at some level ... once I was visiting a friend who I did not suspect of being religious, and yet on her wall was a painting of Krishna and the Gopis .... her attitude towards it was nothing if not reverential, and she even breathed a little differently whenever she looked at it .... yet, strangely she did not know what it was .... she referred to Krishna as "some kind of Rani and her servants" ... she was quite disappointed when I told her it was Krishna, a male figure surrounded by his devotees, the milkmaids ... she identified with the central figure as being a woman, because she needed some sort of value for herself as a woman ... and it did serve the purpose .... God has mysterious ways!!!!!
So, you never can tell ... inside is divinity in all of us .... so do not doubt that people on some level really do understand, and have Bhakti and Love for what they find for themselves ..
Actually what you describe is water to a thirsty people .... and it is something Eastern Religion should be proud of ...
Love & Peace

I wouldn't call it that... people grab onto things for various reasons, some because they believe it works, some because they admire the art and whatnot, etc. People are looking for non-pushy answers to their questions where they can find them and Eastern religions tend to fit that desire.

For many people these are soothing elements and some of the people displaying them they do hold spiritual meaning. I wouldn't call that "hi-jacking".
