I have a Maine Coon named Marlon and he does go outside. In the sumer it's impossible to keep him in as he loves being out in the nice weather - he never goes very far and mostly likes to sleep on a pile of dead leaves at the end of the garden or on top of next doors shed. We have a small garden pond and because of his love of water spends hours sitting by that and dipping his paws in! He's happy to stay in when it's cold or raining but at this time of year he follows me around miowing until I let him out!
He comes in every night - he's trained so when I call he comes back anyway. He also hears my car come home from work at night and quite often comes back for a quick cuddle then.
I've never had any problems with his fur from him being outside - as I'm sure you know the coat is deceptivly easy to look after and doesn't get knotted like some other long haired breeds; Marlon has a brush about once a week.
The only problem I find with him is that he loves to hunt and is always bringing back 'presents' that he leaves by the back door; sometimes he brings them inside and leaves them in the dogs bowl for some reason!
He has been ill in the past however and I have had to keep him in at these times - we bought him a huge 4 tier scratching station to keep him occupied when he has to be in and he loves this! I think to depends on the individual cat and as long as yours are happy being indoor cats then I don't see a problem

Maine Coon's are beautiful cats. But they are just like any cats. Indoors or out. I have two cats, one is indoor and the other is out door. He's always been an outdoor cat so it is very difficult to break him of that. Plus it makes it difficult for my indoor cat who really craves going outside all the time.
So if what you want to do is keep indoor Maine coon cats you can. Just make sure you have enough things for them to keep them out of trouble. Just like any cat. Scratching posts, toys, treats, ect....

If you have pure breeds, then absolutely not. I don't believe any pet cat should be outside for health and safety reasons but people will steal pure breds. We have two Maine Coon brothers that we paid quite a bit for and there is no way they would go outside nor do they want to. They are people cats and need to be with their owners. They are very happy boys.

I have one Maine Coon and she is strictly an indoor cat. Letting cats outside is very dangerous. They could get in fights with other animals, ran over, poisoned, stolen or lost. Indoor cats usually live longer, healthier lives. You will most likely have far less vet trips if you keep your cat inside.
If you do decide to let your cat out then make sure it is micro-chipped, always has sharp nails and spayed/neutered.

I have an elderly Maine Coon, she is 15 and 1/2 yrs, she spends most of her time sleeping now but does go out. When she was a kitten, I used to use a collar and lead, and she even brought me these if she wanted out. When we moved to a bigger garden I did away with the collar as she almost strangled herself. She has a web site if you wish to see her and what she gets up to, she has a diary

Your Cat would love to sun him self and hear the birds. Try making a window box perch that acts like a screen room for him. My neighbor made a screen room with sun shade and PVC pipes and places her cats in them a few times a week to get some sun and fresh air. My husband built a large box with screen over 1 window on the east side of our house. The cat cat jump up on a window perch and then walk through a cat door and go to her screen room! Try a little building project you'll have fun and the cats will love it. I do not recommend them running free, you'll end up with fleas or even worse having them sick from visiting strays.

I have a very spoiled Maine Coon. He decides if and when he goes out. He sleeps on top of my air hockey table and eats off the dining room table. Yes it has 2 tablecloths on it that are taken off when humans eat there.
Most people keep them indoors only.

i had a cat that was killed by a car 3 months ago and i was devastated. I now have another cat that i will not let out due to the dangers she will face. Cars, illnesses, other cats, horrible people. I let her in the garden with me today as she has been crying to go out for weeks now and it got to the point where i felt cruel, so as i said i let her in the garden with me and she wasn't to sure. I would definatley keep them in!!!

You can, but since they have such long fur, I would'nt recommend it.
I had a girlfriend with a Maine Coon, & whenever he got out, he would come back with all kinds of stuff stuck to his fur, & lots of fleas.
I would keep them inside.
