Don't carry cash. Credit and debit cards are good anywhere in the world. You don't have to worry about converting money and you get the best exchange rate. I don't recommend travelers checks since merchants will give the worst exchange rate and the change will be in their money.

If you want you can carry a few hundred in travelers checks for emergency but I would not use them if at all possible.

It's not against the law to have large amounts of money in your house, but it's not recommended. Truly, a bank is the safest place for your money. If you don't want a traditional bank account, you can always get a safety deposit box and keep your valuables and money there. No overdraft fees if you do that!

You will need to get at least some cash in the currency of the country you are going to visit. You can convert currency at some airports or by contacting your bank. I have found the safest, most convenient way to pay for most purchases abroad in with a credit card. Your exchange rate is usually better than you can get elsewhere, it is convenient and is generally safer than carrying large amounts of cash.

Hope this helps!

Credit cards are best. Cash is all right, if you keep it in a money belt under your clothes. Otherwise, deposit it in your checking account and withdraw it with your ATM card as needed. If the latter, check with your bank that your card is set-up for international withdrawals. You'll need a four digit numerical PIN.

Have a great trip!

Buy some American Express Travellers' Cheques. They are safe, accepted in 99% of all establishments as legal tender, and if they are lost or stolen, they will be replaced for you. Don't leave home...etc.

Call your hotel and see if they will cash your traveler checks. If they do, take seven $100 travelers check and $100 cash with you. If not, try to disburse the cash among your fellow travelers.

Visa Travel Money. Google it.

Travelers checks.

p.s. Don't go for American Express traveler's card, I hated using it out of the country.

It's best to get Traveler's Cheques or a prepaid debit card
