If this is a legal copy, the number should have been attached to the computer, maybe on the back, otherwise you may be able to obtain it from Microsoft, although from previous experience it may be cheaper in terms of time to buy a new one.

Hi, on my packard bell recovery cd I didn't need a key when I reloaded windows. This was a disc that I had to copy myself when I first bought the pc. I guess the key was put on the disc when when I recorded it. Yours maybe the same.
Reload windows and if it asks you for a key ring microsoft up and tell them you have had to reload windows, tell them you had to replace the hard drive. They will give you a new key. Make sure you have serial number and details of your pc. So long as your recovery cd is an original you shouldn't have a problem.
We done this at work before now with no problems.
Hope this helps

I know you can recover it in windows 98 by exporting the registry to a text file.
It is the 20'th-30'th line.
If you cannot boot to even a recovery console then you might have to get tricky.
Is it a fat32 or NTFS partition?
Do you have another partition (or drive) that is empty that you could install a borrowed copy of XP (or Win2000) to?
Did you make emergency boot disks?
Could you examine and find the registry from the recovery disk on another computer?
