My sister's boyfriend told me his vet microchipped his puppy--not with the standard chip, but with a chip that has GPS capability. For instance, if his dog gets lost, they can "track" it and find it. Has anyone else heard of this? The only microchips I know are the ones that have to be scanned by shelters, vets, etc.

Yes, I've heard of it and it's expensive. It'll be good if you're always travelling or on the road or camp alot. I have a pitbull and a yorkie and they just have regular microchips.

I think that this is a really good way to keep track of your dog. I had let these people dog-sit for a couple of months until we had got our fence built. When we came to "collect" him they said that he had run off. We found that hard to believe because of the fact that they knew which way he had ran and everything. I know this man that works at a shop nearby and his wife was there that day, she told us that they had gotten dogs before and they just all of a sudden went missing! We didn't know that! So what we think happened is that the man sold him and isn't telling us squat. Our dog ran off with their dog, when I was talking to the guy about it a couple hours later his wife pulls up with the dog and their kids in the car!! I couldn't believe it! His excuse for that was that their dog had a collar and tags and our dog didn't see that's the thing our dog did have tags and a collar unless they took it off. One more thing I'm sorry, but they said they had a fenced yard and they had a lot no bigger than half of a regular sized truck! My point is, if we would have had a microchip put on him than he would be home right now. I miss him and so does my daughter, dearly. THANK YOU for your time!!

Never heard of one, but it is a good idea. In the meantime, they need to get it together and actually make it possible to locate people by their cell phones like they do on all the television shows.

As far as I have heard, the most advanced program now is one that if your dog or cat is lost, you let them know, and they notify all the vets that belong to their program. But not the same as GPS capability. Some day, tho.

No, I havn't heard of that at all. The store that I got my dog from said that there wasn't such a thing. There was only a chip where it has programed where he lives. So, if someone finds him when he's lost, they can take him to the shelter and get him scanned for a chip. If he has one, it will tell where he lives, then he can be returned.

I think your sister's bf is full of it.

While that may be possible in the future, gps tracking chips are not currently on the market for implanting our pets.

I'm pretty sure it was a "normal" chip and he just wants to sound cool.

I think he must have miss understood. There is no chip that can be followed by GPS at this time.
