My 11 1/2 year border collie mix seems to be drinking more water than usual. I normally give her and my other dog a large bowl of water in the morning, then at night, I dump out what's left and refill it. For the last month in the early afternoon, she is barking for me to bring more water. I can't seem to get the water in the bowl fast enough as she is trying to drink. She does have some cysts - one on her back and one on her stomach, and the vet drained them, said they would fill back up with fluid, and that those were just cysts and not uncommon in dogs her age. Should I take her to the vet for the increase in thirst? My fear is that she might be diabetic. Any thoughts?

My guess is diabetes too. Take her to your vet.
If she does have diabetes, you'll have to test her blood and give her insulin injections daily, just like a person has to. If you don't have pet insurance, you should quickly look into it and see if it covers this and when it goes into effect. If you could get it before the diagnosis that would greatly help. Pet insurance plans don't cover pre-existing conditions (can't remember if a medical is required first - I think so). If not, at least your pet will be well taken care of and I'm sure you love her enough to give her the best care.

What could be wrong with my dog? Excessively thirsty - this started about a month ago?

My first question here is what happened to the rest of the puppies. I hope someone called animal control or took them in somewhere they will be safe. I also hope someone saw who dumped the puppies. It's against the law and the cretin should be prosecuted. Secondly, excessive water drinking is called polydipsia. There can be a few things that cause this. Keep your eye on the pup and see if this excessive water drinking continues for another day. If it does then you need to take the pup to the vet. Take a specimen of her urine with you so the vet can test the concentration of the urine. It will make it easier for the vet to arrive at a diagnosis.

I had one dog who lived to be 16 1/2 years old, another that will be 15 early June. As I understand it aging in dogs can be accompanied by excessive drinking, but you should have your dog examined by a competent vet, one you trust. You should be prepared for the possibility of some not nice answers, such as diabetes (treatable) kidney issues (some treatable) and this last issue the recent dog food scare. I know you love your dog. Good luck.

Sounds like your dog is up there in age. I'd have the vet check her out then watch for any other changes. I put one of my dogs down just over a month ago and excessive thirst was one of the symptoms (among many) I witnessed toward the end of his life. Best of luck!

Definitely take your Dog to the vet. Our 14 yo Corgi mix started drinking an excessive amount of water and we took him to the vets yesterday morning and he was ill from the pet food that was recalled, after a night of IV therapy and now antibiotics ( $304.00 later ) he should be fine.

Did you recently change her diet? It could be the food she is eating...I know alot of pet foods have salt in it, and that makes anybody thirsty. I would at least talk to your vet about it and see what they say. Better to be safe than sorry! My dog always drinks alot of water. We have to take it from him all the time cuz' if he drinks too much, he throws up!

I think it would be a good idea to have her tested for diabetes. Excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes and thus I think it would be best to be on the safe side and take her to a check up. I think it can be treated in dogs as well as it can in people.

Please take her to the vet asap! Those are some of the symtoms of this pet food recall that's happenning. Excessive drinking is not normal, even if you haven't feed your dog any of the 50 recalled pet foods, there is probably something going on. Stop wondering and take her to the vet and tell them what's going on..AsSoonAsPossible
good luck!

Increased thirst is the first and most common sign of diabetes and or Cushings Disease. I would have her checked by the vet. They can draw blood and or do a dipstick in her urine. Good Luck
