Think about it this way. Your teacher wants you and another student to 'debate' an issue. Say why Hillary Clinton should or should not be president. The person in the negative position is the person playing the devil's advocate. Also lawyers do the same thing. They argue in court even tho they may not believe the person is innocent. I like playing the devil's advocate, at parties, if you hear someone talking up Hillary-cite your reasons against even if you really couldn't care less.

It means taking the devils point in an argument in a logical and SERIOUS manner to try and discredit a point of dogma or doctrine or other religious discussion. Without the devil's advocate, there would not be a genuine attempt to discover the validity of religious points of view.

When someone is being considered for sainthood in the Catholic realm, there is always someone who has to try to show the negatives of the person being considered for canonization. The formal term for doing this is "playing the Devil's advocate."

Presenting the other side of an argument even though you may or may not agree with it. It's to provide perspective in a discussion of people who share a common viewpoint. It's to make people think.
