It means you're hurting it, nothing to do with it's lineage. Two months ago it probably weighed 1/5th what it does now. That's a huge difference in the amount of force being put on it's neck.

It doesn't mean he's a mutt. It means that you're hurting him. At three months old, he is too big to be lifted like that anymore. Mothers only do that to younger pups which are still very light. They don't do it after the pup is old enough to follow since it isn't necessary to move them like that anymore. Once a pup has grown a bit, it puts alot of pressure on the skin/neck to lift them that way and causes pain. If you need to pick him up, put your arm over his back and move your hand under him so that it is between his front legs. You can use your other hand to support his rear if you need to. This is much more comfortable for him and will prevent you being bitten for causing a puppy pain.

Why would you be picking him up by the back of the neck?? ANY dog will do that! Any dog will cry at being picked up by the back of the neck at this age by a human, because it HURTS! That doesn't mean it's a mutt! Unless you want the dog to end up mean, I'd stop putting it in unnecessary pain! Again, why would you be picking it up by the back of the neck? Sorry, I'm not trying to jump all over you or anything, but no dog, let alone a PIT BULL, should have this done to them for no reason other then to get them out of danger, or a fight with another dog. If you're going to treat him like that, send him my way, I love pits and would GLADLY treat him the way he should be, and a LOT better then you obviously are! And, "like a lil punk"??? What is that?? He's a PUPPY, they don't like being hurt anymore then you or I do! People like you are why this breed has such a horrible name! You should be ashamed of yourself! You're not his mother, he's not meant to be picked up like that by humans unless it's ABSOLUTLEY NECESSARY! As I said, if they're in danger and you can't get any other part of their body, or to help pull them away from another dog, as animal aggression is a given in pit bulls; however, they can be trained to be really good dogs, and animal agression is rarely a problem in pit bull that are trained correctly, and you, my small-minded friend, are on the WRONG TRACK if you want a good dog. Have someone over two or three times your size pick you up by the back of the neck, and see if you don't scream in pain.

Just because he cries it does not mean he is a mutt, it means he is to heavy to be carried like that now. It is a myth that Pitt bulls don't feel pain. all dogs feels pain.
They (the breeder) told you he is a blue American? Does he have papers? did you see the parents? Is he Grey? A lot of people try to sell there puppies as blue nose when the great grand father was half blue and half American. I hope you didn't get suckered into that. Either way a dog can be great regardless of his color or pedigree.

You're hurting the poor baby! Don't you know how to pick up a puppy? You're supposed to hold their bottoms and tops. If you're going to just hurt him and don't know how to care for him, you don't deserve to have a dog. How would you like it if someone picked you up by the scruff of the neck hard enough to make you cry?

Wow, I've heard some bizarre theories on here before, but this one takes the cake.
I have to add to one of the posts above, advising that you not continue to pick up your dog by his neck unless you want him to be mean. You probably DO want him to be mean, so I'm afraid you will keep doing this. Picking up your dog this way is not going to make him mean to other dogs or to other people, it's going to make him mean to YOU, as he will associate you with pain.

That has nothing to do with whether he is a mutt or not. You are a "lil punk" for picking him up like that. You are not his mother so don't pick him up like that!

he cries because it hurts! mothers pick them up like that when they're tiny babies! he's 3 months old now - big dogs like pitbulls grow fast! plus you might have squeezed his skin too hard. you should have some compassion instead of calling him a little punk! maybe you don't even deserve to be owning him if that's how you're going to treat him.
