I have four (lower back, upperback, wrist and upper arm) and my lower back was the least painfull for me. One thing that helped was that fact I couldn't see her working on it. Kind of hard to ignore pain if you're watching it happening. Mine's about 10x5 inches and going over the spine was a bit sensitive, and the ends closest to my sides also, but not really painfull, just tender.
Regardless, any tattoo hurts. Just make sure you get something that is really special to you so it will always be worth the bit of pain you had to deal with to get it.

From my own experience, I thought the same way that it was going to hurt a lot but it really didnt. It feels kind of like scratching a sun burn or a rug burn. The most sensitive area is along the spine, but it is still bearable, and I have a low pain tolerance and have a tattoo across the whole bottom width of my back. I would have to say that the outlining is the worst part, but I think you would do just fine. Good luck to you.

It does hurt. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. Shots don't bother me, so I thought that the tattoo wouldn't either. Wrong! People always told me it felt like a sun burn... I'm black, so I don't burn... I didn't know how that would have felt. I got a tattoo on my lower back, it's relatively large... about 9 inches wide, 4 inches high. The area there is really sensitive. So yes, it does hurt. I almost passed out while getting mine. However, tt was worth it.

Here's an article about pain and tattoos that might help you a little...

Personally: Yes, it hurt, but it wasn't THAT bad...
I have 3 tattoo's, my lower back hurt the least!! Everyone I know who has one, says it hurts the least...It hurts most around the edges(when you get close to your sides) and on the spine...but it's not unbearable...
If you want it...then you need to go in with a good mind set...tell your self, yes it's gonna hurt, but it's not that bad and you can take it!!! The mind set is half of the battle...
Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!

I think it hurt like hell. I'm really skinny so I don't have a lot of meat on my bones and when he got right over my spine I thought I was gonna pass out. Plus I'm deathly afraid of needles but I made it through with no problems. I had someone there to hold my hand the whole time and I held a pillow between my stomach and knees while I was bent over.

I am weird, but it felt good, I had a great artist, who knew what he was doing. It felt like a message. I have another between my shoulder blades, that one HURT!!! That artist was good, but he pressed the needle too deep in my skin. I think the pain level depends on the person's pain tolerance and the artist doing the ink. I have 4 tats (mostly on my back) and only the one between my shoulders hurt.

what do you consider to be "a lot"? i think they hurt, but i think all tattoos hurt. have you ever had a tattoo before? it also depends on how large or small the tattoo is and the way your tattoo artist tattoos.

It varies from person to person and depends a lot on your tolerance for pain. I have one, and strangly, it hurt more when the right side was getting done, but not so much on the left.

I've heard it does hurt a lot. And it will last a lot less than most places since the soles of your feet sweat a lot, that combined with the friction of walking with socks and shoes will deteriorate the ink over time and distort it.
