there becomes a guy and u can rub his belly, and he laughs. many religions do not have this jolly man except for christianity, but then again you have to pay at the church. buddhism is mostly free unless u dont know how to download e-books, then it may cost u between 5-100 dollers for reading material. you will also need a idol of the laughing buddah. good luck, be happy

You shouldn't choose your religion according to 'the benefits' but how well it DOESN'T FIT you. A religion should 'help you grow as a person' so the 'benefits' really aren't 'there' ... if you are looking only at the 'benefits' then you aren't wanting to 'grow' or 'change' in any way. I've been a Vietnamese Buddhist, and lived in a Vietnamese Buddhist temple, because my 'Oriental Religions professor' also ran a graduate school there. I 'didn't believe' anything while I was there, but I did EVERYTHING I COULD to learn and grow and become a better person. Now I'm a Catholic, and I'm 'very happy' in my church ... but I am as happy as I am BECAUSE I was a Vietnamese Buddhist and 'lived according to the way the Vietnamese monks lived ... including getting 'hit on the shoulders' if I started to 'fall asleep' or wasn't chanting properly at 4:30 every morning. Getting up and going to Mass at the Catholic church at 8 a.m. would seem 'daunting' to many 'born Catholics' but I did that for a year ... and it was 'really easy' because of those mornings chanting in Vietnamese (I didn't have a CLUE what it was I was chanting, by the way) had helped me to realize just how 'good' that 'early morning religion' was in helping me get through the rest of the day. So ... become a Buddhist and 'throw yourself into it fully' and LEARN AS YOU GO. You may decide at some point that you 'don't want to be a Buddhist' any more, but the things that you will have 'learned' will stay with you forever. Remember that we are ALL HUMAN and there is something 'connecting' all of us, even Atheists, and you'll 'learn more' about that when you are a 'full Buddhist.' GOOD LUCK ... and BLESSINGS.

I'm not a Buddhist myself, but the biggest advantage can see is real inner peace. At the Living Insights Center in St. Louis, Buddhist symbols and practices are brought together with the traditions of many different cultures, and many people have learned to meditate, to appreciate the wisdom of physical and spiritual purification practices developed by the Buddhists. The statue of Buddha that sits just inside the door welcomes everyone with peace and love, no matter what their tradition. It is a very open-handed, open-minded religion.

Buddhism is all about becoming awake. Meditation is a very good tool. You learn to notice your thoughts. Once you do, you will be amazed and repulsed by the nonsense going on in your head nonstop. Then you learn not to associate yourself with them, or not to be attached to your thoughts, but just observe them. Watch them come and go, like clouds in a clear sky. You learn to notice where your thoughts arise and what motivates your fears and preferences. You can then truly choose your actions from awareness. Buddhism is all about training the mind.

There are many benefits to this belief. You will find a balance in your own life that surpasses any expectation you could hope for. The compassion you will feel toward and share with others will bless you. Buddhism is a beautiful belief that allows it's believers to find perfect balance and harmony in their own lives. It is a selfless, compassionate, belief system that takes tremendous focus, diligence, and consistency. I hope you pursue your study into this wonderful way of life. May the Creator surround you with angels of peace and understanding. Annie

Erm, I'm not exactly sure one should select a religion due to its "benefits"... Though I suppose it's possible that it could broker you the best deal in the afterlife... Anyway, benefis would be it's peaceful, offers multiple viable ways with which to live your life and reach enlightenment, isn't judgemental of others, has no hell, gives one an interesting outlook on life, and offers that one essentially lives on indefinately through re-incarnation until one decides to stop this (the self isn't passed on, but one's actions in the form of karma are).
Now, the other side of things are, well, "Life is suffering", so you get to deal with that fun little tidbit, and, well, as with every religion, you could be wrong...

let me tell you the downside. if you aren't around other Buddhists you will feel alienated from the people around you because they won't see the world the way you see it. i know. i am one./ i'd like to suggest a possible alternative. Eckhart Tolle teaches the Power of NOW(its also a book,if you're not familiar). has much in common with Buddhism, some Hinduism and mystical Christianity.

It provides a different process to think through human experience and spirituality than is usually found in Christianity.
If you are familiar with the practices of Christianity, I can recommend a great book to get you started:
"Living Buddha Living Christ" by Thich Nhat Hanh
