Why do some dogs have a SR# or SM#? Most of the dogs have a SN#. Also, why do some dogs have a DNA# in addition to their SN#? Thanks.

She is a weimaraner if this helps. I have searched the AKC website and can not find an answer to this question.

DNA# means that the dogs DNA has been done and is on file with the AKC. DNA# are a requirement for males that are at stud and sire more then three litters in a year or seven in a lifetime. Responsible breeders will often DNA test not only their sires but dams as well.

The SN or SM number is not for every breed of dogs..each group has their own specific identifying prefix before teh number.
