Because it's human nature to want one of your own. If you study various religions and their myths and traditions, you'll see similarities. But because global communication was almost impossible in those days, people believed that their religion was unique and the only one (except for Hinduism of course which was the very first religion).

If there is a deity then it does not adhere to the emotional expectations and wish fulfillments of one puny species on the edge of the Milky way galaxy, in a universe made up of billions of such galaxies.
Some look for the universal derivative of religion, aside from ignorance, bigotry, and self-delusion: The idea that a deity created the universe, and that deity is an omnipotent, all-powerful god. And that humans acknowledge that commonality through emotional validation known as faith, through parts of our brain that facilitate spirituality.
I do not buy it. Religions have caused too much bloodshed over myths that cannot be validated by reality.

True. Mythical figures cannot "have a religion." And that's the reason for so many - there can be no truth in an (obviously false) supernatural thing, hence *no agreement* about truth.
